||OME EDITIOfI VOLUME XIX, No. 158. HIGHWAY BILL IS PRESENTED If Measure is Approved Eng land Will Have Splendid Highway For Automobile Traffic. London. —If a bill which is to come before Parliament soon is approved England will have a splendid high way exclusively confined to eut mo bile traftic. The proposed road will be about 50 miles long, and 150 feet wide. Its estimated cost is ?25,000,- 000, and is to be constructed by a syn dicate, the London, Brighton and South Coast Motor Road Syndicate Co., Ltd. The idea was conceived by Otto Tamini, a director of the company, with the object of relieving the exist ing main roads of much of their heavy motor traffic, and, in conse quence, the local authorities respon sible for the upkeep of the roads of much of the additional expense of maintenance due to the wear caused bv motor vehicles. Brighton has selected as the Southern terminal ot the new road because it is the fav orite seaside recort of London mo torists. owing to its easy distance, for a day’s outing, and the facilities offered there lor the entertainment of motoring parties. Reinforced Concrete. The roadbed proposed is of rein forced concrete with a bituminous curface, which provides against dust and sideslits. Wherever the present main roads cross the new roads, bridges will be built, so that traffic on neither side v ill be interfered with. The road will be provided with three tracks—the first for tue fast traffic, the second for heavier vehicles, such as auto omnibuses and charaebancs. and the third for auto-cycles and cycle-cars. Each track will be shut off from the others by a barrier. According to the plans the entrance to the road at Richmond will he in the form of an ornamental stone arch and a rectangular building for gar ages, workshops, and the sale of ac cessories. At various points on the road there will be grand stands and workshops. The stands will be for tne observation of auto racing on cer tain specified days, and the work shops for hauling brokendown cars from UiC road and repairing them. At Brighton terminus there will be ornamental gardens and a bandstand. The syndicate purpose building 180 auto-omnibuses de luxe for first, sec nnd third class passengers. The fares will be the same as existing railway fares for the journey between the va rious stations. There will also be a large fleet of commercial vehicles for ll\e convey ance of merchandise. Tle Celebrated Highland Freebooter’s Grave Saved Glasgow.—The birthplace of Rob Roy, the celebrated Highland freebooter, the place where he died, and his grave have been saved by a decision of the house of lords denying the city of Glasogw a r ght to draw a water supply from Loch Voil and Loch Doine. If Glasgow’s re ouest had been granted t would have been necessary, snce these lakes are a part of the eastern watershed, to raise the level of the lakes some 50 feet, whch would have submerged the Rob Lev landmarks. These sentimental considerations were laid before the house of lords in peti t;on after petition, but the decision of ihat body, sitting in its judicial capac ity, was not based upon any of these points. The ancient riiparian regula tions read that water from an eastern watershed shall not he diverted to west ern uses, and it was decided that Glas gow must forgeo its water supply for the prosaic reason that the city is on the wrong side of the watershed. Monarch Plays Role of Movie Actor in Drama Pari* —Kin* Christian of Denmark who, with Queen Alexandrine recently pad an official visit to President Poin care and Mme. Poincare, probaly is the only sovereign who has played the role of an actor :n a moving picture drama. The inrident occurred at Hornbaek, a small watering place near the capital. A cinematograph company had arranged the setting for an unusual scene for the films. It was to be a ship wreck In which a young woman, her child, and the woman’s mother were participants. The ing was promenading on the beach. Suddenly he noticed the unfortunates, their hair disheveled, who seemed to be calling for help. The King started brave ly to rescue them when a young actor, hero of the drama picked them up. the life belts with which they were equipped having lessened the chances of any fatal ending of the scene. The King finding he had been included In the picture was vexed and expressed the desire that It be destroyed. The last half of the drama had to be played without his assist ance.
