SPICK ADDRESS BY HARDWICK Senate Candidate Received by Enthusiastic Audience at Commerce. Leaves for Wash ington, Commerce, Ga. —A large and enthu siastic gathering of voters of Com merce and community heard Thos. W Hardwick, candidate for the United States senate, deliver a spicy political address at the Ellida I’heatre last night. He came here from Jeffer son, where he spoke at the noon re cess of the city court, thus filling two engagements in Jackson county in one day The first candidate for state or federal office to make a speech in the county since the campaign season opened. He waded into his speech without undue preliminaries and held the attention of his hearers through out his discourse sustaining his repu tation as a forceful stump speaker. On His Fitness. Mr. Hardwick said he based his can didacy on his experience, training and fitness for the office of senator. He pointed to his record of 12 years as congressman, and declaring he was 12 years ahead of his opponents even were they ail equally capacitated men tally. In speaking of his record and service, he said: “One ounce of performance is worth 10 tons of promise.” Mr. Hardwick .defended himself against the charges made by Governor Slaton, in a re cent card in which the latter attacked his record, criticized him for staying away from Washington, for voting in favor of an Increased salary for con gressmen and on other counts. His darts were mainly directed at Mr. Sla ton. Mr. Slaton, he said, was dined, barbecued, patted on the hack, county fared and groomed over the state by ills friends to oppose Hoke Smith, his friends thought he was a real game, but when they put him on the ground, he turned out to be a dominecker and ran off in the opposite direction. Of a Fish Trap. The candidacy of Mr. Slaton, he said, reminded him of a fish trap Tom Wat son used to tell about. The trap was set to catch fish going both up and down stream, to catch the fish "a-going and a-eotning,’’ but in Sla ton’s case he said there’s a hole in the center of the trap and he’s losiir4 votes both ways. He said Felder ha-' stated that he wanted to he senator because he was a lawyer and that he was poor and had cherished such an ambition since he was a breadless boy. These are not sound reasons, Mr. Hardwick said, adding that an other capltol would have to be built in Washington to accommodate sena torial candidates from Georgia if the ambition-plea is to be considered. Mr. Hardwick left today for Wash ington, but will return to Georgia the latter part of the week to fill a j speaking engagement at Stillmore on i Friday and at Swainsboro on Satur day.
