A Secret; Federal Players Want to Quit At Least That is What Charley Dooin Says; Want to Join Organized Ball Again. Philadelphia-— Charley Dooin has a secret. The manager of the Phillies let the world In on it today. The Federal League players are all ready to quit! The rank and tile of the Federal league, with very few exceptions, stand eagerly waiting for an invitation to jump straight back into organized baseball," said Charles. "Just about twice 37 Federal players want to come back and ask to come back. If this is doubted, I’ve got the telegrams and letters ready to back up my word. “President Baker, of the Philadel phia Ball Club, stands firm as to the Federal League, and I have to admire him for the stand he has taken. We need a shortstop. Without a shortstop this club can’t hold its own. Here, want to read ’em, right here are valid offers from four Federal shortstops, all asking to have their back-jump fram ed and protected, and all offering to come back to us for reasonable money. "If Mr. Baker consented. I could get every one of the four tomorrow, keep one for my own club and either return the other three to their original club or send them wherever they are most needed. "I’m for barring the read contract jumpers forever, but I think the men who did nothing but quit the reserve rule, disputed and argued as that has been, should be given every chance.” Feigned Blindness For 7 Years For $1.12 a Week Ex-Employers Sued For the Rights to Discontinue Pay ment; Forced to Open Eyes. Birmingham, England.—Judge Amph lett has just found finally that Irene Louisa Powles, a young: woman, has feigned blindness for seven years. “Hide ous hypocrisy,*' was his comment today on the strange case. Her former employers had sued for the right to discontinue paying her $1.13 a week, which had been awarded her un der the compensation laws, and which they had payed for the seven yenrs. She had been a scissors setter. She al leged that filings flew into her right eye totally blinding her. An expert, Dr. Wilfrid Allport, after observing Miss Powles in a nursing home for several days, reported that the girl strenuously resisted all efforts to open her eyes. She was therefore watched by nurses night and day and her eyes were covered with metal shields to guard against the possibility of her tampering with her eyes. As a result after a few days all irri tation of both eyelids disappeared. The lids and eyebaUs proved perfectly nor mal. When the lids were forcibly open ed the girl rolled her eyeballs upwaids. It was necessary to draw the eyeball down with forceps. Dr. Allport dee.ared the girl possesses good normal vision in both eyes and Judge Amphlett ordered that all com pensation be immediately stopped. SANDERSVILLE POLITICS Sandersville, Ga—During the past week Col. A. W. Evans made many speeches in the Tenth district. He is beginning a vigorous campaign and expects to speak in every county in the district at least twice a month until the August primary. He is touring the district in his automobile ac companied by friends from this city. Judge B. T. Rawlings, another San dersville candidate Jor congress, has been doing a quiet and systematic canvass of the district the last few days, but so far has made no speeches. It is thought his campaign will be formally opened up in a few days with a speech-making tour of the district. He is an able speaker and will no doubt entertain his hearers in each place he speaks. Hon. T. M. Sparks Is hack from a tour of South Georgia, where he sounded the political pulse on the sen atorial race and stated South Geor gians were heartily in favor of Hard wick from the Tenth. Mr. Sparks journeyed into an Alabama town while in Southwest Georgia and uncons sciously began asking about condi tions. However, could Alabama vote, Billy would get his share. Judge Beverly D. Evans of the su preme court was here a few dayg cir culating among his old friends. Be fore being elected to the supremo bench he was solicitor of the middle Judicial circuit, then judge for a nurn ber of years. Hot Weather Tonic and Health Builder Are you run down—Nervous—Tired?
