CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET Chicago, Ills.—Belief that after four days decline a reaction was due helped bring about a rally today in wheat. The opening, which wns 1-8 off to l-Ba -1-4 up, was followed by a substantial advance all around. Corn weakened on account of general rains where needed. After starting un changed to 6-8 lower the market steadied close to iast night’s level. Breaking of the drought had some bearisji influence on oats but the effect was not lasting. Provisions leaned to the bull side. Fair to f rain damage in the harvest districts affected wheat. Later, how ever, selling out of a line held firm by suspension caused a down turn. Clos ing prices were steady. Prices 3-8 to 1-2 under last night. Speculative selling based on state bank difficulties led to a renewal of weakness in corn and it closed steady, 1-2 ta 1-8 undes last night. Notice as posted on the board of trade today that Sidney, Long & Co., had failed to pay their debit balance at the clearing house. The firm has been active on bull side of the wheat market which has recently suf fered a sharp decline. UEfiO-OK SMASH ON AIKEN LINE In a head-on, collision shortly before 11 o’clock this morning on the Au gusta-Aiken electric line, at the curve just this side of the Fluey Dell Pa villion, Conductor Julian Salley, of Aiken, S. C., received a broken col lar bone and other minor injuries. He was taken to the Pine Heights Sanitarium at once for medical at tention. It was stated at tae his pital his afternoon that he was not seriously hurt. It Is understood that the cars were trying to “steal a siding,” which ac counts for them running it opposite directions on a single track at the same time. In other words, each mo torman. it is said, assumed the risk of getting the first siding before he met t'ne other car, although each knowing, it is said, tha another car was approaching. The Injured conductor was on one of the company's heavy express cars, loaded with freight from Augusta o Aiken and wayside points, which was hit by Passenger Car No. 102. empty, coming to the city car barn from the barn at Clearwater Tor repairs. The empty car was in charge of Motor man'Reeves and Conductor Ramin. Motorman Whitlaw was operatitng the express car. Both motormen, fortunately and al most miraculously, escaped serious injury. They were sligntly bruised, however. It. is said that, the falling of freight, rather than the sudden compact, is responsible for Conductor Salley’s in juries. He was on the inside of the car at the time, and the car was heavily laden with boxes, etc. Both cars were damaged somewhat the most of which was coufened to t'ne vestibules. Neither car left the track. Each, it is said, was running only at a moderate rate of speed. The curve on which the accident occurred is a sharp one and it Is stated that the two cars, were upon each other jiefofe either motorman eaw the other. TO REINTRODUCE ROME RULE BILL London, —Premier Asquith an nounced in the house of commons his intention to introduce the promis ed bill amending the Irish Home Rule bill before any further progress is made by the House of Lords with the second reading of thtj main meas ure. The Unionists thus have won the day with their insistent demand that he should take this action. The lords will be entirely Tree to change the amending bill as they think proper and it is generally as sumed that they will insert provis ions for the unce ditional exclusion of Ulster from the operation of the Irish Home Rule bill and also for the protection of the Protestant minority in the rest of Ireland. The Unionists in this way will be enabled to test how far the govern ment and the Irish nationalists are prepared to go in the direction of a compromise. The new bill is not -lkely to be brought into the House of Lords be fore the week beginning June 21st DEATHS MITCHEM, MRS. But, sad to say, the birds were on their way to Baltimore at this time. The official in, charge having received a “wire” ordering their release at four-thirty o’clock, and incidentally the expectant spectators were disappointed. Now, In order to make up for this disappointment, the Southern will turn "loose” four hundred pigeons tomor row morning at four-thirty o’clock. These pigeons are bound for Baltlr more and will be set free on the plat form of the Southern Express Com pany.
