SATURDAY, JUNE 13. TightwaddO the Monk - There Are Ways of Getting Something For Nothing ■ ——— r- ■-r K - T ~~~~ r&NE ME A I(' <ao MAKE ME ce'r up i'S THE MIDDLE n ( a I .... ..... BARKER, NEW LOCAL TWIRLER, WON HIS FIRST SALLIE GAME In a Time-Consuming, Though a Snappy Game, Combacks Defeated the Columbia Comers Yesterday Afternoon By the Score of 2 to I—Kelley Featured With the Stick As Well As in Short. In a time consuming though snappy game yesterday the Combacks defeat ed the Columbia Comers by the score of 2 to 1. The game was filled with sensations and the greatest exhibition of pitching was seen here —that is, the greatest in years. Kelly and Mackert were the only two local men able to find Winchell. But Kelly’s find was enough, for out of four times at bat he managed to get two singles and triple and the best part of it he made one of them count. Kelly not only featured at the bat but as well in his fielding. Little Excitement. Shaw created a little excitement yesterday when he put the winning run over the rubber by scoring from second on an infield hit. It took some highly sensational base running to do this and this is the brand that Shaw turned loose. Finnegan featured for the visitors when he made a sensa tional running catch of a foul off third. Kelly showed some mighty fine “head-work” in the seventh inning, '’yilowing ir an account of said in ning: Hzeil the first man to face Barker, the new twirler for the locals, clouted the pi It for three bags. (Things took on a new hue with this “gent” on third and no one out.) Betzel ham mered a particularly hot one > to short. Kelly fielded it without any trouble and, as cool as a cucumber, threw him out at first, but first he made sure that Ezell was still hugging that third sack. Same Stunt. • Finnegan attempted to pull the same •stunt, but it was just as impossible jto get one through that part of the [field, a least, and therefore the inevi table happened: he was thrown out •at first and Ezell was also held on third. Correll was the next man up. 'Barker, evidently frightened by the !]ook that he gave him, threw the pill wild, Wallace just managing to knock it down. Ezell was desperate by this time and attempted to cross the rub ber. Barker ran up just in time to [catch the ball, which was thrown to him by Wallace, and tagged the run ner. This retired the side and inci dently gave the visitors somewhat of a disappointment, especially Ezell, as ihis nice lead was ruined and ruined [by that "Critter” Kelly (at least this ‘is the way that he expresses it). Barker’s Debut. | Barker made his debut ■ yesterday and certainly did show up fine. Dur ing the whole game he did not walk a single man. The only one that reached first without connecting with |the sphere was Osteen, who was hit. The box score: Columbia. Ab. R. H. Po. A. E.
