The Simmons Co. One of the letters, which came Into possession of the White House, but was not given out with the others to day was circulated by the Simmons Hardware Co., of St. I»uls. E. C. Simmons, head of the company, had been selected for membership in the federal reserve board and his nomi nation was to have gone to the sen ate today. This morning it was an nounced at the White House that Mr. Simmons had declined the place. White House officials, emphatically denied, however, that the circular letter had any connection with this development. Another Circular. Another circular made public, pur ported to have been sent out by the Pictorial Keview Company of New York, was signed by W. P. Ahnelt as ipresldent. It was dated May Ist, and enclosed a draft of a letter | “which embraces the views of u ma jority of the thinking people oT our section of the country and which should be addressed to the president : of the United States, the congress \ and members of the Interstate cons merce commission respectively." The letter concludes: “If you prefer to use copies of the enclosed letter we will mall jou as many as you can conveniently use. It will be more effective, however, if you write them on your own letter heads.” Appeal for Postponement. The form letter attached was an appeal Tor postponement of trust legislation and a five per cent freight rate increase (or the railroads. A copy of a night lettergram con taining the contents ol the form let ter In condensed terms was attach ed. The letter purported to have been sent out by the Simmons Company, was dated June 9th, which was after Mr. Simmons had been offered a place on the reserve board. Not since President Wilson made his charge oT "an Insidious lobby” In Washington to influence tariff legislation has there been a sensa tion of such a sort In official circles. Will Strongly Uurge It. Washington.—Anti-trust legislation will be pushed through the senate during the present session of con gress by every means at President Wilson's command He made It plain to callers today that he had no In tention of abandoning hts original program and that he did not believe congress would adjourn before the trust bills were enacted. The president believes business conditions are improving In some re elects but that It will be much worse lor business for several months over what the antitrust legislation Is to be than to have It passed now He let It be known that he realized a well defined effort was being made to postpone antitrust legislation. Denying that congressional lead ers have suggested an adjournment after the appropriation bills have been passed, the president told call ers that the senators with whom he has talked on the subject had advised Immediate action on the trust bills. Binge of mediation negotiations at Nla- KHia Falls, President Wilson and Secre tary Bryan, upon resuming communloa ton today with the American delegates wore chiefly concerned over selection of a provision! president acceptable to all factions in Mexico. The United States holds firmly to Its stand that a consti tutionalist must be named to succeed Huerta while the Mexican delegates are arguing for a “neutral” candidate.
