TUESDAY, JUNE 16. LUST TRIBUTES TO STEVENSON Body of Former Vice President of U. S. Lies in State As Thousands Pass By. Notables at Funeral. Bloomcinton. Ills. —With business suspended and the city draped in mourning Bloomington today paid final honors to Former Vice-President Adlai E. Stevenson. The body lay in state in the rotunda of the court house while thousands filed past. The procession to the church was headed by a band, a troop of the Illinois Na tional Guard and surviving members of the Stevenson Escort Club, a fa mous marching organization of the campaign of 1892 which accompanied the vice-president-elect to the inau guration in Washington. There fol lowed 300 miners from the McLean County Mine, of which Mr. Stevenson was for many years president, mem bers of the bar association, the may or and other city officials and numer ous local organizations. The Second Presbyterian church held but a frac tion of those assembled. The services were conducted by the Rev? J. N. Elliott, the Rev. Edgar D. Jones of Bloomington and the Rev. Martin D. Hardin of Chicago. The interment at the Bloomington cemetery was private. The list of honorary pallbearers included many men prominent in law, politics and business headed by James S. Ewing, formerly ambassador to Belgium and long Mr. Stevenson's law partner; former Gov. Joseph W. Fifer and Con gressman Fitzhenry. Among the notable persons present were Former Vice-President Fair banks, Former Gov..- Francis of Mis souri and Gov. ancf Mrs. Dunne. INCOME TAX IS MILLIONS SHY Exact Figures Are $23,000,- 000, According to Secretary McAdoo—Hull Defends His Measure. Washington, D. C—Representative Hull of Tennessee, author of the in come tax law in a statement today de clared that after careful observation of the operation of the act he feels "no reasonable doubt as to its successful administration and satisfactory yield of revenue in the future.” This be lief was expressed despite recent esti i mates by Secretary McAdoo which | showed that the income tax, according to returns to date, had produced $23,- 000,000 less than the treasury depart ment s estimates of $54,000,000 revenue from that source for the first ten months of its operation. In his statement Representative Hull says: "It would be both harsh and unfair to pronounce permanent judgment on the law at the present initial stage. Many thousands of taxable persons, both here and temporarily abroad, have not yet made returns. Primary Nominations For the Maine Election Portland, Me. —Mayor Oakley S. Cur tis of Portland received the democratic nomination for governor at yesterday's primary, according to returns oday. Gov. Wm. T. Hains, republican, was renominated without opposition. The four Maine congressmen, Daniel G. McGillicuddy, democrat, and Asher O. Hinds, John A. Peters and Frank E. Guernsey, republicans, all were re nominated. At the election in September Mr. McGillicuddy will be opposed by Har old M. Sewell, republican; Mr. Hinds by J. C. Scates, democrat; Mr. Peters by Wm. R. Pattangill, democrat, and Mr. Guernsey by Mayor Charles W. Mullen of Bangor, democrat. PROCLAMATION HELD VALID. Dublin, Ireland.—The king's bench court yesterday held valid the gov ernment’s proclamation prohibiting importation of arms into Ireland. This judgment reverses the assize court of Belfast. Pennybacker of Austin, Texas, for re-election as president and which in the absence of nominations from tho floor are equivalent to election were made today by delegates to the conven tion of the General Federation of Wom an's Clubs. Names may be written in on the ballots at the election tomorrow but they will not affect the result, it is stated. The advance of the suffragists was again reflected at today’s session when Miss Mary Garrett Hay of New York was nominated as a director. Miss Hay is president of a big suffrage organiza tion in New York and known as a vigorous worker for equality at the polls. Other nominations were: First vice-president —Mrs. Samuel B. Sneath, Tiffin, Ohio. Second vice-president—Miss Georgia A. Bacon. Worcester, Mass. Recording secretary—Mrs. Harry L. Keefe, Walthill, Neb. Corresponding secretary—r Ms. Eugene Reilly. Charlotte, N. Some of the delegations, as their states were recognized in making the nomina tions, sang their state songs. Several states jo : ned in “Dixie,” but the leader pitched the key so high that some of the tones became squeaks. The delegates laughed unrestrainedly and Mrs. Penny hacker said: "Dixie had gotten too far North.” When nominations from the floor were called for Mrs. Reilly was suggested for second vice-president by Mrs. Graham, of Louisiana, but Mrs. Reilly declined, saying she preferred to abide by the committee’s action. SEVEI PERSONS BURN 10 DEATH 20 Are Also Seriously Injured. Trapped in Armenian Lodg ing House. Jumped From Windows. Milford, Mass. —Seven men were burn ed to death and twenty seriously In jured when eighty persons were trapped in a burning Armenian lodging house early today. The bodies were taken from the up per floors of the four and a half-story brick and wooden l%l!d ng. In addition to the twenty men taken to the hospi tal suffering from burns or from in juries received in .lumping 30 sustained minor hurts. The interior of the build ing was burned out. Wild Excitement. The fire, the cause of which has not been determined, started in the dining hall on the ground floor. When fire men arrived flames weer shooting through all four floors. Escape by the two narorw stairways was cut off and the only means of getting out the build ing was by jumping from the windows. There was a scene of wild excitement as the crazed foreigners attempted to save their lives. The building, erected more than 50 years ago, formerly was used as a shoe factory and Its timbers were impregnat ed with oils. Victims were laborers and moulders employed at a manufacturing plant in Hopedale. None of them had families. The opening of the leading so ciety race meeting found more than 1,- 000 London policemen and hundreds of detectives from Hcotland Yard assembled on the historic course as reinforcements for the regular Berkshire county jollce force, which had been mobllzed In full strength. The six-mile rout from Wlnd sodr Castl to th cours was lined all the way by policemen. Very Stringent. Arrangements for guarding the en trance to the royal enclosure on the race course were more stringent than ever. Every applicant for a ticket had to he vouched for by some responsible official. The track was closely guarded arid there were triple rails to prevent any unauthorized persons from reaching It. For several days past throughout the day and night men accompanied by watch dogs have patrolled the course and alarm guns have been placed In po sition around the stands and lawns. The Americans.
