IQ END ISON
AND DIXON LINE
Pres’t Expresses Wish That it
Should be Forever Forgotten.
Writes Letter.
Washington.—President Wilson ex
pressed the wish today that the Ma.
son and Dixon line be forever forgot
ten. In a letter to the president, H.
11. Joy of the* Lincoln Highway As
sociation, asking that the road run
from Philadelphia to Gettysburg
through Washington the president
suggested that It would he a good
means of further obliterating sec
tional feeling between the North and
the South. The president’s letter
was as follows:
"I am sure that the entire country
is interested to see to It that there
should no longer exist a North or a
South in this absolutely united coun
try, which we all love and that the
Imaginary Mason and Dixon line
should be made once and for all a
thing of the past, and as a small
contribution to that end 1 earnestly
suggest that the Lincoln highway ae
aociaiion should grant permission to
place the official Lincoln highway
markers on the - macadam roadway
from Philadelphia to ' Washingtoa
through the properly selected streets
of the latter city to the Lincoln mon
ument anil from there through Fred
erick, Md., to Gettysburg.
“I am reliably informed that this
route is now, or will be in the near
future, a modern macadam roadway
from Philadelphia to Gettysburg
through Washington. The entire ex
pense of the roads, I am informed,
including officially marking the high
way will be be defrayed by local in
terests
"Cordially and respectfully yours,
“WOODROW WILSON."
INCREASE SPAN
OF HUMAN LIFE
New President of American
Medical Ass’n Takes Office.
Theme is: “Service of Medi
cine to Civilization.’'
Atlantic City, N. J.—At the first gen
eral session of the slty-fifth annual con
vention of The American Medical Asso
ciation here today Dr. Victor C. Vaughn
was installed as president of the asso
ciation, succeeding Dr. John A. With
erspoon of Nashville, Tenn.
Dr. Vaughn nude “The Service of
Medicine to Civiiizution” the subject of
his inaugural address.
“In the last century the average of
human life has h*en increased by fif
teen years and this increase could be
duplicated in the next twenty years,
lie said “if the facts -we now possess
were effectively employed.’’
“The further deve opments of medi
cine, both curative and preventive, de
pend on scientific investigations. The
public is the beneficiary and should in
every way encourage medical research.
The federal government and the states
should sustain and promote scientific re
search. That government is the best
which secures for its citizens thg great
est freedom from disease, the highest
degree of health and the longest life,
and that people which most fully secures
the enjoyment Of these blessings will
dominate the world.
"We boast of a great civilization, but
this is justified only within limits. The
historian of the future will have no dif
ficulty in convincing his readers that
those who lived at the beginning of the
twentieth century were but slightly re
moved from barbarism, as he will tell
that the school saloon and house of
prostitution flourished in close proximit
ity; that the capitalist worked his, em
ployees under conditions which preclud
ed soundness of body; that the kibor un
ion man dyramited buildings; that
whilst we sent missionaries to convert
the Moslems and the Buddhist ten thou
sands murders were committed annual
ly In our midst, and that a large percent
age of our mortality was due to pre
ventable disease.
"In each state there should be a
hygienic laboratory equipped with able
men supplied with facilities for the study
of sanitary conditions and for the prose
cution of scientific research. The
Hygienic Laboratory at Washington
should be developed into a great insti
tution for research which would improve
the conditions of life.”
aKiother freak bill.
Atlanta, Ga.- Representative Geo.
Glenn, of Dalton, has another freak
bill to introduce this year, which may
make him as famous as his former
bill to prevent women's wearing
peek-a-boo shirtwaists. His new law
is aimed to legalize the tango, the
turkey trot, the hesitation and all the
new dances which have so stirred the
wrath of the conservatives. Mr.
Glenn designs his bill to combat that
of a South Georgia member who
threatens the ban of the law on such
dances The Dalton man wants them
danced before the supreme court to
prove that they are all right.
COATS OFF IN CHURCH.
Atlanta, Ga. -Attendance next Sunday
at the Grant Park Baptist church is
likely to tax the capacity of the bulld-
I ing if the present weather keeps up,
while neighboring churches may be
nearly empty. That’s because members
of the church have voted, In congrega
tion assembled, to let the men remove
their coats in church from now until
October.
I The pastor Rev. Frank J. Fleming,
put the question to the women mem
bers, and every female hand in the edl
flee was raised.

You Can Have Hot Water
Cold baths are a fine thing for
those who like them, or rather those who
can endure them. The shock that must
follow when the warm body comes in con
tact with the cold water is too sudden and
severe for many of us.
There is no reason why you should de
