tend and escaped through that win
dow without disturbing the bucket
and basin. Moreover, it was impos
sible to conceive of any burg.ar
choosing last night, with the ther
mometer eighty-seven, for his daring
business.
So he arrested Mrs. Lion, who had
fired the pistol; enjoined Miss Giv
ings, at iier peril, to appear In court
this morning anil give an account of
her hallucination; selected a few more
witnesses, and called for the wagon.
Miss G., however, gave such a good
account of everything this morning,
that the court was reluctantly con
vinced there had been a real burglar
after all. Or, at least, she- had really
thought so. Why, she bad seen him.
And spi n his shadow. Phantoms don’t
have shadows. And Mrs. Lion, awak
ened from sleep with the news that
there was a burglar in the house, was
in nowise to blame for shooting at
him. So the case was dismissed.
But ain't the heat awful?
