WEDNESDAY. JUNE 24. How Mrs. Courtney Has Helped the Cor nell Crews to Victory at Poughkeep sie; The Big Events Friday New York. —The main reason why the Cornell crew have been so suc cessful in years gone by is because of the minute attention given to every detail concerning their train ing by Coach Charles E. Cofirtney, his assistants, and by Courtney’s wife, who for years has acted as “mother” to the “sailors” in the Cor nell “navy.” When other boat crews land at Roughkeepsie about three weeks be fore the big boat races they usually have to spend about a week getting their quarters in shape. No one pays any real attention as to what kind of water they drink. And no one carefully examines into every bit of food they eat. A Summer Vacation in New York at THE PLAZA Fifth Avenue and Fifty-ninth Street is an ideal one, as the Metropolis offers every facility for enjoyment, and the Plaza every comfort and luxury. It is delightfullyJocated opposite Central Park, assur ing peace and quiet. The coolest Hotel in New York. Convenient to theatres, shopping district and nearby coast resorts. A week or so before the boys are to go to Poughkeepsie for the final two or three weeks of training on the Hud son, "Mother” Courtney journeys up to Poughkeepsie invades the Cornell quarters and aided and abeted by a squad of women puts the place in a spic and span condition. When the boys arrive, everything is ready for them. ilrs. Courtney, under the direction of her famous husband, has a chem ist analyze the Poughkepsie water each year. If it isn't quite up to the standard it is rejected, and if no suit able water- is found in that neighbor hood, Courtney has a big supply ship ped on from Ithaca —the kind of wil- The Shelburne European Tlan. It has been found in numerous occasions that a change in drinking water has so affected the general health of a crew that it has wrecked their chances. Mrs. Courtney takes care of the job of ordering the food. She sees to it that every bit of food that comes in to the quarters for consumption by j the boys is fresh and just exactly what she has ordered. And she su pervises its cooking, making sure that everything is as it should be. Down at the boathouse, John Hoyle, assistant to Courtney, and a famous I boat building, sees to it that before i the boys get into a shell everything [ is in perfect shape. Every bit of rigging must fit. The seats must slide just right. The shoes must be of exactly the right kind and fit. Not the slightest de tail in getting the boat ready is ever overlooked by Hoyle, for he knows that if he does the eagle eye ot Courtney will spot it in a fraction Of a Becond. Therefore, is it any wonder that Cornell, so thoroughly trained and so perfectly conditioned, so often triumphs over rivals who seem to out class them in natural rowing ability and in endurance powers? Rowing experts are predicting an other “swept the river” victory for Cornell in the regatta at Poughkeep sie on the 26th. The Ithaca outfit seems to be better than that of 19x8, while none of the rival crews have loomed up as formidable as Syracuse and Columbia did last year. The 1914 Syracuse crew so far has made a miserable showing. Under the driving pace forced upon them by Coach Ten Eyck, the Syracuse men may do a “come-back” but even the most ardent Syracuse supporters do not look for a 1914 triumph. And the strangest part of Syracuse’s mis erable showing this year is that there is in the crew seven of the eight men who Btroked Syracuse to such a won der victory last year. The Wisconsin aggregation is not looked for to furnish any real trouble. Pennsylvania has a habit of spring ing surprises every so often, but the sharps feel that this isn’t one of those times. Columbia on its early showing, doesn’t look to furnish bet ter than third or fourth this year. ANOTHER STAGE IN HOME RULE Liberal Leader in House of Lords Introduces Bill to Amend the Irish Measure. London. —The crisis In connection with the granting of home rule to Ire land entered another stage today when the Marquis of Crewe, Liberal leadeer, in the House of Lords, Introduced a hill to amend the Irish homo rule bill. The terms of the amending bill are identical with those offered on March 11 by Premier Asquith and refused by Kit- Edward Carson, the Irish Unionist lender, who described the proposal as a, “hypocritical sham." By the new bill the parliamentary electors of each county in Ulster would lie allowed to decide by vote whether the county should be excluded from provisions of the home rule hill for a period of six years from the first meet ing of the new Irish parliament. Never Before. Never before has a hill been pre sented to parliament to amend a measure not yet on the statute book. This was, however, the only means of overcoming the deadlock, ns the house of lords refused to consider the main hill until the full proposals of the gov ernment were before it. In Introducing his ld)l, the Marquis of Crewe dwelt much on religious dlf flcultles surrounding the question of Ulster, but while he admitted the ne cessity for some form of exclusion fpr for those who deemed themselves af fected by tlie home ruV# hill , he con tended that the exclusion of tho entire province of Ulster would Involve great injustice.
