This disease— appendicitis—has be
come «o common and so much dread
ed that it may be well to throw a
little light on it's real cause and
symptoms. What Is the appendix? It
is called in medicine the vermiform
Appendix—which means worm-like
appendage. It is a worm shaped pro
jectlon, appended to the large intes
tines, and is situated in the right
groin. In its normal state It Is about
one-half Inch wide and three Inches
long and Is of the same general con
struction as the intestines. What
is It's functions? Its use seems to be
to furnish a fluid, a lubricant found
nowhere else in the intestinal track:
this probably explains why those
who live through the operation for
its removal are never quite well and
suffer from constipation. What are
the symptoms of chronic appendici
tis? Any abnormal conditional pain
or weakness In the intestinal tract—

TUESDAY; DANIELS ORDER BRIEF
Washington, D. C.—Speculation as to

Secretary Daniels’ order banishing in

“All orders are to be reasonably in

when asked what was to he done with
liquor which happened to be on ships

secretary added that he did not expect
his officers to feed the contraband goods

A Year's Supply. *
This phase of the new order of things
is important because some of the ships
have been accustomed to procure a
year’s wine mess at one time. Es
—all are danger signals.
What are symptoms of acute ap

ly over the abdomen; most severe on
th© right side, pains are accompanied
by nausea and vomiting with bowel
trouble. Either constipation or diar
rhoea. Is an operation always neces
sary? No. It Is usually advised by
surgeons In spite of the fact that
seven cases out of ten are fatal.
What does appendicitis mean? As
the suffix —It always indicates inflam

Intlamed condition of the appendix,
caused by the wedging in of particles
of food in process of assimilation.. In
