Probably Three-Fourths of American Rep
resentatives at Olympic Games in Ber
lin Will Be Collegians
New York.—Probably three-fourth*
of the American rePreßtative* at the
Olympic games in Berlin will l>e col
legians. or young men just out of col
lege. The exceptionally fine perform
ances in the intercollegiate* at the
Harvard Stadium, the Mississippi Con
ference at St Louis, the Western
Terences at Chicago, the Pacific coast
meets and elsewhere Justify this pre
diction today.
Another Maxey Long is likely to de
velop in « sturdy hoy named Cowman,
from the Kolia. School of Mines, who
defeated a ldg field on a rather slow
tra<k at the Mississippi meet in St.
l-fOUis by the good going of 48 2-5. Ex
j erts who saw him say he will improve
in the next wo years.
From Chicago comes word of re
markable performances in the mid*
distance events by W. A. Goelitz of Il
linois, Sanders of Illinois. Huff of
Michigan, Begetmin of Chicago, Wil
liams of Wisconsin and Hast of Perdue.
Ward of Chicago, and F. W. Kelly of
California, demonstrated at the Penn
relays that they are as good as any
high hurdlers in America.
Sprinters.
Bond and Seward of Michigan, and
Keller of Cornell, are exptocted to d«i
\elop into the sprinters who will make
the team. Howard Drew of the South
ern University of California, is now
in a class by himself as a sprinter, but
it is a question of whether or not he
will hold his form for two years, lie, is
nearly thirty years of age, and experts
say he will lose his great speed before
the next Olympics. Dave Caldwell of
Cornell, Ted Meredith of Pennsylvania,
Donald Llppineott of Pennsylvania.
Spelden of Cornell and Madera of
Pennsylvania, are middle distance
runners who are expected to be on the
American team. All of them show
great form this spring and each is
likely to improve with training and
competition.
In California, Edwin Besson seems
to he improving in the high jumps. 110
recently est Wished new figures in this
event and reports from the coast way
be 111 continue to Improve.
Other Collegians.
Other collegians who have shown
Olympic form are Boatsy of Coluhia in
the shot, Hailey of Vermont in the
hammer throw, Richard* of Cornell in
the high Jumps, Whitney of Dartmouth
mouth in the hammer and discus
throws, Hofftnire of Cornell in the dis
tance runs. Nichols of California and
Oler of Yale in the high Jumps, Fergu
son of Pennsylvania in the low hur
dles. Cline of Colorado in the middle
distance runs.
Brown of Yale In the half mile,
Uonchridge of Yale in the hammer,
B«rrnn of Harvard, In the quarter-mile
oash. Camp of Harvard in the pole
vault. Nordell of Dartmouth in the
1 road jump. Preble of California in the
high hurdles. Bingham of Harvard In
the quarter-mile* dash. Mackenzie of
Princeton In the mile run, and Kohler
of Michigan In the discus.
While the colleges undoubtedly
will he in the majority, the clubs have
many youngsters who promise to make
records before the selection of the
team. A few of the veterans. Hitch as
Pat McDonald. Matt McOrath and
Abel Klvinl are Ukeh to retain their
Prin In their specialities, but most of
them contenders for places on the
tram are likely to be youngsters.
Some of Youngsters.
Some of th* youngsters who should
round into the great champions be
fore Iklfi are the three (Jordon boys

Louis, Fred and William, Jim Powers
of the Boston A. A., Kidney Leslie, the
young distance runner of the Long

New York A C.
The Cordon boys are three athletes
who, experts say. will soon earn world
wide fame. Louis is n half-miler who
ctln cover his distance in 1:65. Fred
end William are milers and both can
beat 4:20 for the mile. It was William
who defeated Abel Kiviat in the Bax

him. They belong to no club and it is
their intention to form an organization

Of course some of the present day
champions will hold their form until
the next Olympics. Torn Halpin of
Boston, is a sturdy fellow' and seems
to improve In the middle distance runs
with every race. Kmil Miller of Pat

Mucks of Wisconsin is a young rr.*»n
and should improve throwing the dis

t)f the distance runners Ray of Chi

say that he will increase his speed
several seconds before the Berlin
