S, BIROS Officials of Biological Survey About Ready to Announce Results of the Census. Washington, D. C -Officials of the Biological Survey In the Department of Agriculture hope soon to be able to an nounce the most accurate count ever made of the birds In the United States. Returns from some of the hundreds of nature-lovers around the country who have enlisted as volunteer enumerators have been coming In, reflecting an en thusiastic Interest. In the count. When the census was decided upon about 250 bird enthusiasts in all sections of the country who previously had rend ered valuable service were asked to sup ply the desired information, and in ad dition to these, several hundred others volunteered their aid. Since June Ist The counting has been going on since June Ist. and was to have wound up by July Ist. but it probably will be some time before the last of the returns are In and announcement is made of the total bird population. The census will not include the varieties known as game birds, but in all other respects it will F e hh thorough and as well classified as is practicable. Previous estimates by the bird experts are that there are 880 main species of birds in the Tnited States and Canada, the varieties being more gener ously disturbed in the eastern states than in the west and the least of all in the praries. But this is only a guess. The enu merators in the present count have been assigned typical tracts of woodland, cul tivated land and pasture, and asked to count the birds oh each. Officials of each state will be asked to furnish the Department of Agriculture with infor mation showing the total number of acres of each kind of land within the borders of the states and the number of birds in each state then will be fairly accurately computed. Plan Adopted. The plan adopted by many of the ob servers Is to zigzag hack and forth across the chosen area at daylight, counting the male birds of each species, as at that time of day. at this season, each is in full song and easily seen. After the migration period s over and the birds are settled in summer quart ers It Is safe to consider that each male represents a breeding fair. One of the main objects of the census, by the wav, is to determine how many pahs of birds of each species breed within definite areas. A count taken in a part of Chevy Phase, a suburb of Washington, showed thirty-four species of birds in a tract of twenty-three acres, the total number of breeding pairs being 159, about seven to an acre. The average. It is stated is about one pair to an acre. As the tract In question is thickly populated, tlie bird experts of the government see in this report a refutation of the theory that the presence of many people tends to de crease the number of birds.
