WELL-KNOWN WOMAN TALKS
ON DRESS REFORM.
"Lillian StuaTt,” who is known to
Augusta friends as Lillian Biggar,
who has appeared in almost all the
big cities on her lecturing tour in re
gard to better dressing along 'higienic
lines, was recently in Evanston, 111.,
and an exchange from that place,
speaking of her, says:
“Among the many interesting vis
itors at the biennial convention oT the
General Federation of Woman’s Clubs
is Miss Lillian Stuart, of St. Louis,
who is solving the question of proper
clothing for the human body. She is
the founder of the only school in the
world of applied science and arts to
dress in life.
The Institution is named the School
o? Harmonious Dress. It teaches the
proper selection and adjustment of
the wearing apparel of the human
body.
“It’s all a matter of evolution plus
education,” says Miss Stuart; “simply
cultivate in the pupil a keen discrimi
nation which will enable him to se
lect that which Is best In clothing on
the basis of the need of the human
soul and body. It must be economic,
serviceable and beautiful. Woman
must learn to love her body as God
as made it. Correct and happy
thoughts must be stimulated. As the
brain grows, corsets and one-toed
high-heeled shoes go. The mind of
the individual is developed through
dress, and harmonious dress Is (level
open through the mind.
■Women kill themselves with
clothes, and are ignorant, of it. They
are unknowingly breaking their
hearts and ruining their homes be
cause they cannot have all they want.
The great, secret of it all is that they
do not know how to dress quietly
and harmonioithly within their means
to suit the time and occasion.
A woman is determined by what
she wears and how she wears it
The donning of a false color often
proves fatsl. The wearing of the
wrong color and dceign causes many
women to marry the wrong men.
They deceive themselves and all with
whom thev come In contact.”
Miss Stuart opened her school ten
vesrs ago and has met with unusual
success. Working girls, artists and
business men mike up her classes.
Tier greatest interest !s In small girls.

very first the child designs Its own
clothing.
Each garment Is put to this test:
Does it interfere with the natural
movements of th» human body? Doe
It have a degenerating effect upon the
soul? Does It satisfy our idea of p

CONVENTION OF NATIONAL
SUFFRAGE LEAGUE.
The convention of the National Suf
frage League, which will occur in
Nashville in November, is anticipated
with especial enthusiasm throughout
the country because of the number of
Important women who are to speak.
In The Tennessean Sunday morning
appeared the following:
For the coming National Equal Suf
frage League, which convenes in the
city In November, there will be gath
ered for this occasion a number of
prominent women socially and profes
sionally, which no one event has ever
before assembled in Nashville. Buch
women as Mrs. Ponnypacker, presi
dent of the National Federation of
Women’s Clubs; Olivo Schriner, Frau
Anker of Norway, Miss Borg of Den
mark, Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, Miss
Jane Addame and a long list of names
of equal prominence. ,An anticipation
which takes precedence of any othet
Is the fact that all who are Interested
In the movement and in vital question!
generally, will have the privilege ot
hearing these leaders discuss the sub
ject of equal suffrage.
Mr*. Mary Ware Denneta, national
executive secretary, writes the mem
ber of the program committee in the
city interesting reasons why the
speakers suggested for the various
mass meetings were especially named
for the reasons which follow:
Senator t,ca of Tennessee, for his
strong stand on our question and for
the very great Influence he would
have In congress und in Tennessee.
Chief Justice Walter Clark, because
of Ms very wide influence in North
Carolina and throughout the South.
George Creel, because of hi« vivid
presentation, of suffrage results In the
West, particularly In Colorado.
Walter Bynner, because of hts In
creasing number of suffrage articles,
stories, poems, plays and speeches.
Mrs. Tannin, because she has re
cently organised the new Washington
Woman Kuffrage Council so assist the
work of our congressional committee.
The Store That Has the New Things First
She Is a remarkably able woman and
an interesting speaker.
Mrs. Funk, because she is a most
able speaker and can present the na
tional amendment in a most success
ful way.
Mrs. Catt and Olive Schriner for
reasons everyone knows already.
Dr. Shaw says that Frau Anker of
Norway and Miss Rnrk of Denmark
are exceedingly Interesting women,
and it would be a pleasure to honor
them as International guests.
Mrs. Beckenrldge, because of her
onderful appealing power as an orator
and the special appeal she can make
to Southern women.
Mrs. Jacobs because of her increas
ing influence in not only her own
state, but throughout the South.
Zona Gale, because of her world
wide reputation as an author and her
enthusiastic suffrage interest.
Miss Shaw says it will be exceeding
ly difficult to get good speakers from
all the suffrage states.
Ethel Moore, one of the leading
members of the California Civic Asso
ciation, Immensely Interested in the
playground movement.
Mary C. C. Bradford is state super
intendent of education of Colorado,
also a member of our congressional
committee.
Ella Flagg Young has been asked
to speak at the two last conventions,
and has been obliged to decline each
time because of the pressure of her
own work. Dr. BhRW hopes very much
she will find it possible to accept this
time.
Miss Breckenrldge suggested Mis*
Nichols as one of the leaders In the
recent municipal campaign In Chicago.
Miss Grace Abbott, to present the
handicapped condition of many of the
Immigrant women, and Mrs. Baldwin
to present the barriers facing the
young colored women.
WOMEN AND CIGARETTES.
Occasionally something Is said to a
graduating class that Is likely to attract
some attention. Of course, such an oc
currence, fortunately, Is rare und eom
mencement addresses are generally pla
tudlnous and antique, as It appears they
ought to b*. Some sympathy la due.
therefore, to the graduating students of
a fashionable girls' school addressed re
cently by Dr Ls Maron Russell Briggs,
dean of Harvard University and presi
dent of Radcllffe College While It may
be a little early to determine the full ex.
tent of the shock, no doubt It was con
siderable.
“There Is no earthly reason," said he,
"why a woman should not srnoks cigar
ettes If she wishes to do so." He did
not end there, to b« sure nor begin
there but with this he broke away from
the conventional and venerable speech
prescribed tr/r such occasions. It Is all
tt< more ratable, too. because the
speaker touched on a subject that was
likely to Interest the graduates
It Is due Dr. Briggs however, to add
that hl» momentary japs* was not In
the form of advice to girls to smoke ci
garettes, Nothing of that sort was said
It would be superfluous anyway in these
advanced days, When young women
smoke if they want to, advice or no ad
vice. But having touched on the mat-

I duly entitled to the same liberty. But
It Is deplorable that she should educate
herself to such habits."
And so It Is, With the bewildering
question of woman’s rights. Is man
to have no rights that will be Inviolate
