C.—The first hand pri mary of the senatorial campaign was taken here Tuesday, hut not by Gover- ! nor Blease. when W.' P. Pollock asked '' those voters who “believe in Cole j Blease’s record hold up hands." Not a j hand went up, although hundreds re sponded to the reverse proposition. It | was distinctly an antl-Blease crowd numbering fully 1,200, less than 100 of whom followed the governor from the meeting when he concluded his speech. Blease spoke second, Senator Smith first. Two years ago, in the gubernato rial campaign, Blease was the favorite. He carried Abbeville county In that con test by less than fifty votes. Senator E. D. Smith confined himself pricipally to cotton and his record in the senate. He denied that his cotton exchange bill was designed to help one gambler against another, as charged. Smith, as he concluded, was handed a “cotton bou quet," a large stalk of cotton with many open bolls. “Here's my sweetheart,” ns said, and the crowd loudly applauded. Probes Richey Case. Governor Blease said he came here mainly to tell about the state s finances and read the record in the R. A. Richey case, showing upon what he based his action In liberating Richey. He said the Betiate had just borrowed $350,000 at the low rate of 3Vi per cent, although It had been reported that an extra session of the legislature would have to be called to provide for the rais ing of funds to pay the state s ogbliga tlons. He read or referred to practi cally every letter, certificate, etc., in tlie Richey case, saying he did so lo nail the des that had been circulated In Abbe ville county regarding the matter. He said that Richey had not been pardoned or paroled, but given his freedom on bond of $5,000 until his phjsicul condi tion warrants his return to the peniten tiary to complete a ten-year sentence. ! Richey Is a middle-aged white man of this county. As Blease finished and left the stand such cries as “Stay Coley and take your medicine,” “don't run," “he can’t stay, were heard. Denounces Editor. L. T> Jennings denounced the writer of an editorial in the Yorkville Enquirer for, according to the speaker, impugn ing the motives that prompted him to enter the race. The article, as read by ! Jennings, contained Insinuations that i Jennings and Pollock were in the race merely to heat Blease and help Smith; that possible the selfish interest behind their motive is "money, expenses paid from some source and a good bonus in addition." Replying. Jennings declared that if the writer of the editorial does not ei'her furnish proof or retract the statement, •he is a contemptible, cowardly liar," and if ttie editor can prove the truth of his statement charging a prearranged plan to help Smith, he (Jennings) will annate $5,000 to the deaf and dumb in stitute and withdraw from the race. w. P. Bollock said Blease slandered Abbeville county when he said it would require an extension of his term to give hint time to sign pardons if he had to pardon all the lawbreakers in Abbeville county. He said he would discuss sev eral national issues before holding up “Cole L. Blease in all of his hideous nakedness." He said he dared the governor to try to explain some parts of his record and declared Blease vouldn't remain on the stand and hear his own record. He said that, although Blease denounced United States Marshal James L. Sims because the latter, when a hoy set type on a Re publican newspaper, the governor ap pointed on his staff Edwin . Mirsch, of Kingstree, son of the man who owned part Interest In and helped conduct the same paper Sims worked on. He again exhibited the calico back union Republi can ticket of 1880 bearing the names of J. P. Gibson, also a member of the gov ernor's staff. Woman’s Duty to Herself. Every woman owes it to herself to keep in good health. No one can rea sonably be expected to maintain a cheerful disposit on when half sick. Indigestion and constipation are two of the most common ills to which women are subject and fortunately are easily cured. Mrs. H. U. Getty, Indiana. Pa., writes “lyast summer I was advised by a friend to try Cham berlain's Tablets for indigestion and constipation. This medicine not only cured me of the disorders but toned up my wnole system so that my health has been better than for years since taking them." For sale by all dealers.
