BRIGGS PHONE 1551. 417 Dyer Bldg. game, which was marred by three costly errors by Kelly and one by Shaw (“Ueys” first this season) the two games proved to be an exception ally fine exhibition. The locals started it off in the first inning of the f.rst game by scoring two runs. Tile visitors cams hack at the locals in the fourth inning with three runs. Manager Brouttiers' bunch tied the score up in the eighth, and then, in the eleventh "Shot Gun” Wallace oame to the bat and rapped a clean single to center thereby scor ing the winning run for the locals an dincidentally winning the first game of the double-header for the home boys (we knew you were sav ing that hit for a purpose. Jack, just stick around, you fit in nice). “Danny’s” Another. Little “Danny" Clark (sometimes known as the "ice cream kid") was the cause of the second game being registered to the Combacks’ credit, being the real cause of the one, and only run being scored during this game—'twias a sacrifice—but that's what won the game, so there you are. By copping these two games (Char leston tied up with Macon yesterday, sad to say) the locals again step into their little “hole,” third to the top in (lie percentage column. Tile local hunch is now hut two games short from being at the top of the ladder— the nearest that they have been to the “bunting in the past ten years, with the exception of the time wnen Chattanooga was played for the pen nant. « Tremendous Crowd. So, within easy reaching distance of the top the locals marched down to the park this afternoon in order to Play the last of the series with the Crowderites—all bent on showing the enthusiastic “Augusta Day" crowd what real baseball is—there's about 1,000 fans-already seated, and still more coming. Winchell is to twirl and is deter mined to do some slabwork, and if this game is not also registered to “Babe's” credit there will certainly be a reason, and some reason at that. It's now only a matter of a few days before the leadership of the Sallie will be in Brouthers’ hands, and then —well, this manager, above all others, sholud be shown that his efforts have been appreciated in gathering “his set” together. This was the first game of a double-header Heist for Hartford outpitched Jensen. Wild Over French Champ. London.—Georges Carpentier, the French champion, who will ' meet Gunboat Smith, the American heavy weight in a 20-round fight at Olympia Thursday, came to London yesterday. He was given a demonstration at Charing Cross, that for size and en thusiasm would not have been accord ed a popular fioreign monarch. Eng lfshment and Frenchmen by the thou sands jostled each other to catch a glimpse of the champion or shake him by the hand. Traffic in the Strand was complete ly blocked. Horses were unharness ed and perspiring French admirers dragged their hero's carriage to a hotel, followed by an immense crowd that cheered most of the way. Car pentier was compelled to show him self on the balcony of the hotel, where he received another vociferous reception. It is expected 20.000 persons will witness the fight. Extravagant prices are being offered for seats. President at Game. Washington—President Wilson yes terday saw the Washington baseball team lose for the first time since he has been in the White House. Every other time he has visited the park the home team won, but today Detroit broke the spell. When tne Tigers appeared on the diamond, “Hughey” Jennin/i let out one of his famous yells and doffed his cap. Mr. Wilson returned the sa lutation wife a bow and a smile. ONE OR T’OTHER.
