Says Athletics Won’t Win the
American League Pennant of 1914
As the Dope Stands Now Sixth Place i 3 Where They Will
Finally Land—Athletics “Doped Out” As the Weakest
Club in the Race—Reputation Has Scared Rival Clubs Into
Losing Games.
New York—Prepare for a little
laugh at our expense All ready? All
right, here goea—the Athletics will
not win the American league pen
nant.
About once a year. If not oftener,
■ ach one of us feels certain of
thing that nearly everybody else de
ride*. No matter how other* may
dllfer with the opinion, It continued
to exist. Here Is our one tnyear.
Theie may lie human beings some
where that share this view of the sit
uation in the Hail Johann circuit, but
if there are we are forced to the
truthful admission that we have fail
ed to feet them yet. However, that
statement goes the Athletics will
not win the American League pen
nant of I fit 4 and we only ask that
the loud guffaw he postponed until
October, ho that all can be sure that
the correct side of the mouth Is doing
the haw hawing.
Who'll Be Champion?
If the Athletics are not going to
win the pennant, who is? That’s a
natural question, and as lor the ans
wer to It, you can s'-arch us. Maybe
there will he something more pointed
along those lines about the first of
September, hut aH for the present we
can't even guess How is it then
that we have this idea the Athletics
wdl lose If we can’t name the win
ner? That also sounds reasonable.
Hut the answer to that Is easy. There
aro live clubs In a more or less com
pact. bunch—Detroit, Washington,
Chicago, Hoston and St. Louis —any-
one of which may come along asd
i.ose out the world's champions in the
home stretch.
The way things look through our
glasses, Just now, the Athletics are
the wcak--st club among the first six
In the American League race. Sixth
place Is where w<, think they rrally
ought to finish, If jill the clubs would
play strictly to our reckoning of form
from now on to the end.
The Tigem. Senators, White
Ited Sox and Browns all anpear to
u to be stronger clubs than the
Mackmeu and front what we have
een of them and heard these clubs
all have played better hall to date
than tne Athletics.
Another Question.
Another question then how is It
that the Athletics have led the league
for so long a stretch If they have not
played the best hall. The answer is
this, only this their reputation has
scared every rival club Fear, on the
part Of the opposing side, has lighten
ed the task of the Mackmen. When
ever a champion and a challenger
meet In any line oT sport. If on strict
ability the two seem perfectly evenly
matched, who Is the favorite" Isn't
tt alnavs the champion? Because the
contender is awed by the reputation
of the title holder, burking against

something that figures to carry an
edge of superiority whether la actual
ly does or not.
Though the other clubs—any ball
player in the league will tell you bo —-
realize that the Athletics of this year
are nothing like the Athletics of a
year and three years ago, the conten
ders forget this when they engage In
battle with the champions and, sub
consciously are swayed by the Idea
that they are up against something
that can’t be beaten. (James are not
decided strictly on the merits of the
Laitling teams this year when the
Athletics are a party to them. The
other clubs get uncertain of them
selves, fidget around and wonder con
stantly what the Mackmen are going
to spring next, Just 4s they dftl when
In their prime. The fact that they do
not spring the old tricks- double
squeeze plays and such —In the way
they used to fakes little difference.
The contender Is Just ay much up in
the air as If the Mackmen were going
to do so, and a margin oT about 35
per cent of the light is put on the side
of the Philadelphians In this way.
Bad Baseball.
In a word, more bad baseball has
been played against the Athletics
than gainst any other team in the
league—that in a nutshell, is why they
have been “up there" as the bail
■I layers say It.
But the other clubs are beginning to
get next to themselves, and to the
Athletics —to the real state of af
fairs.
Gradually lliey are getting their
confidence when they buck the 1913
pennant machine, beginning to play
the same game against tile cham
pions that they do against one an
other And, unless we are led badly
astray by our eyes and ears, some one
of those five clubs mentioned, and
maybe several of them, will be ahead
of the Athletics and increasing the
gap at the hound by the time the
month of August has rolled by.
A brief analysis of the Athletics'
playing strength in a comparative I
way seems to use to read about as fol
lows: Strongest hatting club in the
league, heal infield fielding in the
league, secon 1 to best work in the
patching department, about fourth in
all sorts of haserunning, fifth In out- j
field Holding and absolutely last in I
pitching.
Fear Diminishing.
The last in pitching is the part of
this size-up that will find the most
disputants. Bender and Plank are
names to conjure with—yes, names,
hut names never did much but scare j
rival teams after the arm has ceased
to he an efficient tool. That flock of
youngsters can not be called the
world heating gang prophesied for it
last. year, it Is almost worthless with
out the two veterans in shape for
reliable relief duty, and there Is no
den\lng that Bender and Plank have
skidded considerable In short, the
Athletics are now a top heavy unbal
anced club. Fear in the hearts of the
rivals Is diminishing dally. When
it la finally gone, w'atch the conten
ders rip the hide off the White Ele
phants and toss them out for a. ca
reening spin downward which will be
one o r the biggest sensations of a
sensational baseball year.
Now, once again, we ask you to
kindly postpone that laugh until Oc
tober.
ANTARCTIC TRIP
PLANS COMPLETE
Shackleton to Leave in Three
Weeks From Now—Has High
Hopes and Plenty of Money.
London.—Sir Ernest Shackleton’s
plans for the Antarctic exploration
dash are now practically complete. If
all goes well the expedition will leave
this country two or three weeks
hence. Shackleton departs with high
hopes und plenty of money. The re
cent gift of $120,000 by the Dundee
millionaire jute manufacturer, Sir
James K. Caird, has put the expedi
tion in an absolutely sound position,
and any other money subscribed will
be devoted to the installation of wire
less apparatus and the provision of
water-boats.
Shackleton assured me this week
that ills scientific staif was complete
and that no lender ever set out with
a hand of comrades better fitted for
he work before them. One of Shack
ton’s vessels, the “Endurance,” is at
the west India Docks here. She is to
take the Transcontinental party to
the Weddell Sea.
Splendidly Built.
Although small compared with the
other Polar vessels, she Is splendidly
built, able to steam ten knots, and is
the fastest craft which has been em
ployed In this class of work. She
will carry oil fuel as svell as coal
briquettes, and Shackleton has decid
ed that the water tanks should be util
ized for the oil For the water sup
ly two 1,000-gallon tanks are to be
Installed on the deck, and one of
these will be equipped with steam,
so that in the Polar region ice can ho
melted It Is the hope of Shackelton
that the party may bring home In one
o' these tanks some live specimens
of animal life In the Antarctic.
100 Doga.
About 100 dogs are expected here
from Canada In a day or two and one
lot of about 20 Is to be trans-shipped
to Australia to Join the Aurora—
Shackleton’* second vessel and the
Ross Sea parly. The other lot—
about SO—wlll be sent on to Buenos
Ayres to await the arrival of ahe En
durance, The nerlal propelled auto
sledges purchased In Norway were a
great success In their trials, and
Captain Orde I.ees, who Is In charge
of the motors, has gone to Switzer
land to test the third (positive drivel

part of the equl; ment.
