But in the cynic witli the sneer there is no hope either for the citizen or for the na tion. The American Republic this very day feels ttic degradation of its life, faces il with open eyes and a resolute heart, and sets itself to reach again the heights of simplicity and honesty and unselfish service. And it is by the stern but inspiring discipline of leaders like Woodrow Wilson, men of vital ideas and of imperative standards, the nation will be saved. Cuba, the Philippines, Panama, Meixco—President Wilson is leading the American people to make those names signify the redemption of the United States from the vulgar and crass ma terialism of a past generation’s democ racy. He may not wholly succeed. But he cannot wholly fail.—Toronto Globe. The President and Business There is nd evidence that the Presi dent has changed his attitude toward business, as is the gleeful assertion of some of his political opponets. It Is business that has changed its attitude toward the President. Mr. Wilson’s attitude toward businesa was revealed in his speeches as a can didate and as president-elect. It was stated with more precision in his inau gural address and in ills remarks to congress on the subject of tariff reduc tion and banking and currency reform. On every occasion the President has informed business very frankly as to the nature of the democratic program, and he has never failed to Invite advice, counsel and co-operation. If business from long habit understood this to mean dictation, it has discovered its error. In this aspect the recent visit to the White House of a delegation from the Cliicago Association of Commerce is noteworthy. For once,-at least, import ant buisness men addressed the Presi dent intelligently and witli self-respect. They asked no favors. Titey made no absurd plea of poverty and helplessness. They had wise suggestions to offer bear ing on constructive legislation and exe cutive policy. They bullied nobody and they tried to slim-slam nobody. This is exactly in ilne with the Presi dent's attitude from the first. He seeks information and assistance. The Chi cago men urged him to push the trade commission and securities bills and to let the Sherman law alone. It was good advice and honest as well It was precisely what Mr. Wilson has asked from business men, and it is what he needs. There is no mystery as to the Presi dent’s attitude toward business. The remarkable thing is that business, with all its sagacity, could not perceive earl ier that a sincere man charged with sol emn duties who asked for counsel could not be bluffed or stampeded in the old disreputable way.—New York World.
