MEDICAL DEPARTMENT of the UNIVERSITY OF 6EORGIA
Showing interior views as well as picture of the handsome building. Also picture of the University Hospital, which is conceded to be one of the hands al
timore. This building has lust been completed, and will be ready for occupancy very soon. The University of Georgia Medical College is within fifty feet of the Hospital, y Au
gusta has contracted with the College for all professicnal service; it will, as a matter of fact, be under the jurisdiction of the College.
The City cf Augusta has fulfilled a long-felt want of proper hospital facilities and has just completed two large hospitals, containing over 250 beds. The hospitals are si ua ® , a J acen t
to the Medical College on the same tract of land, and are most complete in their arrangement and equipment. The full medical control of the hospitals is vested in the Medical o g , and
all the material is available for clinical teaching. The visiting staff is appointed by the college, thus obviating many of the difficulties and drawbacks to ideal methods ot teacning
In the, higher classes much of the time is openi in the. clinics, both out patient and hospital. In the fourth year certain cases are assigned to each student who act,s as clmica c erk and
dresser, taking histories, mak’rg necessary clinical examinations, and in this manner spending a large part of his time in the hospitals which are open to him at all hours.
The out patient clinics are held in the basement of the College Building, where the equipment is ample ana the clinics largely attended. Besides this, all the medical chanties in the
city are directly under the control of the Medical College, such, for example, as the visiting physicians to the poor.
Thus all the teaching is brought under one unit at one place, the conditions are ideal and it is difficult to see how the arrangements could be improved.
The eighty third annual session of :he College of
Medicine of the University of Georgia will begin Septem
ber the 16th, 1914, and end June Ist, 1915.
The Medical College of Georgia was founded in 1828,
and a general course of lectures begun in the fall of the
following year. In 1 873 an affiliation with the University
of Georgia was brought about but this was purely a nom
inal connection, though the diplomas were signed by the
Chancellor of the University.
A graded course was established in 1893, consisting
of three courses of lectures in the beginning, but gradually
lengthening out until the four-year course was required
in 1898.
Realizing the necessity for a more definite relation be
tween the University of Georgia and its medical depart
ment this matter was taken up with the University Trus
tees and in 1911 the Medical College of Georgia became,
by special enactment of the Legislature, an integral part
of the University of Georgia, and now operates under its
laws and regulations, -hus establishing the relation in fact
as well as in name.
THE COLLEGE BUILDING
The Medical Department of the University of Georgia
has a tract of some forty-five acres in the heart of the
city, and a substantial four-stcry brick building.
In the basement of this building are located the quart
ers of the outpatient department for the treatment of the
city poor. It also contains a locker room and lounging
room for the students, shower bath, autopsy rooms and
storeroom for anatomical material.
