Varnville, S. C. Is Quickly Recovering
From Its Disastrous Fire
Varnville, S. C. —On the fourteenth
day of last May. the town of Varn
vlllo was swept by a fire which
threatened for a time to wipe out the
entire business district.
When he ilames were finally sub
dued it was found tha eight build
ings had been burned to the ground.
A furniture store, two hardware
stores, two residences, the postoffice,
a cold drink stand, and general mer
chandise store, besides the express
office and several other offices,
which had been in the buildings were
a total loss, which agggregated
somewhere in the neighborhood of
$15,000, partially covered by insur
ance.
As soon as the smoke has cleared
away the Varnville citizens set ener
getically to work to repair the rav
ages of the fire and it it probable
that in a very short time there will
be no trail of it left. The majority
of the stores were a total loss, but
Mr. M. Murdaugh, who managed to
save a part of his stock moved im
mediately into the town hall, where
hn will continue to conduct his busi
ness until the new store which he is
building is finished. This will be a
very attractive one-story brick store
with a fifty-foot, front, and will cost,
when completed, about $5,000.

“A Pretty Woman in Faultless Attire is The
Noblest Work of Creation"
But a pretty woman knows that faultless attire does not so much depend
upon the cost of the material as the corset over which it is worn.
There is the great secret—the corset. And in this day, when specialists are
working for woman's best results, the “fat” or “stout” women are by no
means in the “hopeless” class.
The Rengo Belt Corset
Is a specially made Corset for those whose abdomens or hips or busts are largo. The stout wo
man who wears I lie Rengo Belt Corset may be just ns modernly proportioned as a much thinner I
woman. Ana we iring the Rengo Belt Corsets means pressure, and proper pressure, at necessary
points, which pressure, besides being confining, is reducing. In the end the Rengo Belt Corset puts
woman in the way of attaining that much desired thinness.
The Illustration
Shows the main points of advantage in the Rengo Belt Corset.
There is first the belt feature, a strengthening across the abdomen which absolutely prevents
any misshape there or about the hips.
Then there is the elastic belt feature, an elastic webbing let in the corset at. a point well cal
culated to maintain a constant but gentle pressure at all times, therebv accomplishing the work of
reduction.
No Discomfort
There is no discomfort in wearing The Rengo Belt, Corset.
The lines are scientifically constructed, and contrary to what is expected of a confining and
reducing Corset, it is extremely comfortable at all times. Women who are wearing them constant
ly attest to this fact.

Interest In the Heavyweight Situation On This
Side ot the Atlantic Rapidly Dwindling; '
Willard May Fight Johnson
New York. —Interest in the heavy
weight situation on this side of the
Atlantic is dwindling apace; and un
less a Caucasian relieves a certain
Jack Johnson of the title shortly,
speculative manifestation will wane
until it dies out entirely.
For a time after Johnson thumped
Jeffries into submission at Heno, the
big fellows commanded all tne atten
tion of the pugilistic element. The
existence of other divisions never
entered the minds of those who are
the bulwarks of the game. They
concentrated their time and energy
upon developing a man capable of
coping with the might Ethoplan.
The boom in tne heavyweight di
vision was 00. "White Hopes" bobb
ed up like mushrooms, and went in
to seclusoin quite as rapidly. “Beat
Johnson," was the slogan of the pale
lace, and a million dollars was to be
the reward of the successful com
batant.
The Johnson became implicated in
a government trial and he blithely
skipped to the other side of the big
protecting ocean. The sportively in
clined determined to forget Jonnson.
ft was decided not to resurrect him
until there appeared a white man
wiho had a chance with the burly
black.
"White Hope."
Johnson was forgotten- The "white
hope” brigade soon was looked upon
as a hope\sß conglomeration of beef
and brawn, lacking wholly In initia
tive. They were shy brains. The
crop was sieved thoroughly, and only
three showed latent fighting ability.
DON’T HURT YOUR
LIVER WITH CALOMEL
When your liver becomes torpid and
sluggish, you can take calomel and
whip It into action, but the calomel
will leave your body weaker and sick
er than ever. Calomel is a very pow
erful drug, a form of mercury, and
need never he used because there is a
perfect remedy to take the place of
calomel, that baa all of calomel's good
medlclnah effects with none of its dan
gerous and uncertain follow-ups. Its
name is Dodson's l.fver Tone.
Your druggist sells Dodson's Liver
Tone with the guarantee ttTht if you
don’t find that it treats you much
better than calomel, he will give you
your money back with a smile. Dod
son's Liver Tone Is a true tonic for
the liver, purely vegetable, and with
such a pleasant taste that It Is no
trouble to get children to take It. It
Is absolutely impossible for it to Jo
anyone any harm.
THE AUGUSTA HERALD. AUGUSTA. GA.
There were Gunboat Smith, Jesse
Willard and Frank Moran.
Then cunio the real tests. They
occurred only recently over in Baris
and London. In Gay Paree, Moran
made a pitiable showing against John
son, while in a London ring b'mit'ti
was declared a technical loser to
Georges Carpentlor, tne white heavy
weight champoin of France. True,
the decision was said to be outrag
eous, but the fact remains that Gun
boat did commit a foul and thereby
lost he fight. Even In his fight In
New York, the Gunboat showed a
tendency for unfair tactics. His
transgression of the rules were over
looked by the referees, who lacked
the courage of their convictions.
Gunboat sadly missed his guess when
he tried them on Eugene Corrl, Eu
rope’s foremost arbiter.
So Jess Willard ijlone remains of
the American contingent. If the lathy
rancher could only be Induced to pay
a visit to France, and get into the
ring with Johnson, it Is not at all
unlikely that a new champion would
emerge from the brawl.
Willard possesses pretty nearly
every quaililcatlon of a champoin.
fine thing in hrn disfavor is that he
must be thoroughly aroused before he
will put forth Ills best efforts- He Is
lackadaisical, and will not allow his
temper to become ruTfled while an
opponent is not annoying him with
hard blows. Willard Is a terrific
puncher, and is extremely clever for
a man of his heft.
Willard would stand an excellent
chance of defeating Johnson. One
thing must he impressed on the lanky
Westerner In order thta he may hum
ble the champoin. If be would only
fermit Johnson to do the leading he
would have a glorious chance of scor
ing a knockout.
O'Brien.
Johnson’s forte lies in making his
adversaries lead, and beating them to
the counter. Only one man ever has
been able to make Johnson abandon
his watchful whiting tactics. That
was/ Jack O'Brien. He outwitted
Johnson, and when the Nurrildlan
tried to lead he floundered dll over
the ring.. Johnson had to laugh at
his own lunlcrous efforts to land on
O'Brien. Fortunately for "Black
Jack,” O’Brien had nonilng more
damaging than a wnsp-llke punch, so
Jack weathered the six rounds.
Johnson has expressed a willing
ness to fight Willard six rounds in
Philadelphia, ten rounds in Boston,
or twenty ovel* on the other side
The contest In America would be no
decision affair, so Willard is serious
ly considering crossing the Big
Drink to take on Johnson In a long
bout with the rhampolnshlp at atakc.
Meanwhile Carl Morris, at one time
the foremast “'white hope" lncapac
Ity, surreptitiously lias sailed for
England in search of trouble. Gun
boat Smith Is really the object of the
voyage. Morris lias given the Buck
ley protege some little trouble in
their two contests in this city, and
('ari believes he can prove to the sat
isfaction of lamdoners thta he is a
suteroir battler to Smith.
If Smith turns down the propoai.
loin, Morris would not spurn u match
with Carpentlor, nor even one with
.Tack .Johnson, for that Is w*hat Mor
ris set out to do four years ago -
fight ills way through the “White
Hope” ranks In order to get Johnson.
Should Willard also make up his
mind to brave the 'brinky, America
would then be without a single good
heavyweight.
