total cash and pledges of only about
18.000. So after careful consideration
they came to the conclusion that the
city of Augusta was not yet ready to
undertake so c’ojnprehensive a pt hem* 3 ,
and that they must be further educated
along thhsp lines before it could be car

statement to the directors of the As

them tiie list of pledge*, expressing the
hope that all who had made the.?e
pledges would see fit to stand
by them and pay them Into the
Associated Charities’. i consider
that the whole community owe a
debt of gratitude to all of these
gentlemen for the time, thought and
energy which they have spent in try
ing to realize « -larger vision in the
social work of our city. The failure
is due to no fault of theirs, but simply
to the fact that me are not ready lor
it. The plan has not been entirely
abandoned but simply held in reservo

Associated Charities of Savannah pays
its secretary just double the salary of
ours and gives her four paid assis

retatary *2,500 a year and has several
other assistants. Of course, both of
these cities are larger than Augusta,
yet the amount we pay Is very smal'
In proportion.
During the period when the new
lilans were under discussion the old
association suffered a falling off in
its income, as people were uncertain as
to the outcome. We are glad to see
tl'.at a large majority of those who mad
pledges in support of the new plans
an* paving the whole or a generous
part of them to the present association,
and we hope that ail others will do
likewise. A committee composed if
tile five ladies on the board of direc
tors are now undertaking to form an
auxiliary of persons who will agree to
give a dollar per month and hope to
secure one hundred names for thl:.
auxiliary. Any one wishing to give
ill this way may phone their names tn
Mrs. Hollingsworth, phone 786-J, with

Kvery one of our charitable Insti
tutions Is doing splendid work and
ought to be supported, but each of
these Institutions has a group of en
thusiastic persons working tirelessly In
its behalf. The Associated Charities
has no such group of interested friends
yet It cares for a large number of
unfortunate people who are reached In
no other way. I might add that the
Children's Home, while now Incorporat
ed, Is still under the care of the As
sociated Charities and is partially sup
tiorted from our treasury. I simply
ask in conclusion that all w*ho have
anything to giie for the relief of the
poor and suffering will give thougflu
ful consideration to the claim* of the
Associated Charities.

Chandler Economy
is Not Theory
We make certain statements- -or claims, if you please—
as to the economy of the Chandler Light-Weight Six.
Chandler owners all over America have proved the truth
of those statements.
The Chandler weighs only 2885 pounds. It
runs 16 miles or more per gallon of gasoline,
seven hundred miles per gallon of oil, and
seven thousand miles per set of tires.
The Chandler shows speed, too, of three to fifty-five
miles per hour on high gear.
It climbs every famous demonstrating hill in the country
on high gear. It possesses every high-grade feature found on
the costly sixes. And the new profit-sharing price is $1595.
