vincing, earnest, fervent. Judge Ham
mond explained that lie was not a

the circuit, his candidacy, lie hail no

when a man had been slandered, nils

Judge Hammond asked what public

The Mlllen Speech
Judge Hammond then look up the
episode of Mr. Peebles' Mlllen si cech.
He stated that at l lie Invitation of

len to spend a few days; that while
there, Mr. Peebles spoke; that he

a right, to do, to hear him apeak. Ho
stated that he heard Mr Peebles
speak, and later at Appling answer
ed that speech, but lo' and behold, on
the next .Sunday Mr. Peebles had put
an advertisement In The Augusta
Herald headed, "Peebles Flays Ham
mond at Mlllen, Ga." The Judge said
that Mr. Peebles asked him a question
in tho course of his speech, to whlcn
Judge Hammond replied, stating thal.

had ever been made.

not know that the great orators, our
great National or State orators, ever i
attempted or succeeded in such a
performsuce.
I did not know what terrible dan
ger I was in until I picked up the Sun
day paper in which Mr Peebles sal.l
he had "Flayed" me and ibut I had
left Ihe field and a lot of other rot
and nonsense. 1 recall that line
