GROUNDS FLOODED, BUT GAME
WAS PLAYED; AUGUSTA LOST
His Umps Moran Decided That the “Conditions” at the Park
Were All Right, Therefore Contest Called and Lost---How
ever, the Fans Didn’t Think So, the Result Being Stands
Were Empty.
Yesterday afternoon was an excel
lent time to pull off a game of ball,
at least to thought Angle Moran,
however, the fans used better judg
ment and when the time for the cur
tain to rise on the little nine-act
drama—or rather comedy, for that's
about the size of It, for what club
can play ball on wet grounds—there
was not a fan on the grounds-—yce,
there was one. Mr. Fan has a tar
paulin, a big umbrella and the whole
bleachers.
Stone twirled a magnificent game;
Cochran was just a shade better.
There were only five players, includ
ing both clubs, that were able to con
nect, Braun. Marshall and Betting lor
the Sea Gulls and Burgess and Brou
thers for the Combacks. Manager
"Babe" Brouthers being practically
the star in the matter of getting a
hit; out of three times at bat he con
nected twice. Come to think of it,
it can’t be remembered around these
diggins that Brouthers ever fanned —
yes, he did that thing twice —in a
whole season.
The Triple entente" was pulled by
Cochran on three men; stone regis
tered five. Stoney would get a
couple or men on base and then saw
the next three out, that ts, he pulled
this stunt once and was on the road
to doing so again when the third man
connected and flew out to left
Well, the game was not as good as
could be expected, but under the cir
cumstances the hammer should not
be used.

Erstwhile Augusta Catcher
Succeeds Backstop Dilger.
Now a “Regular.”
"Old Shot-Gun" Wallace was back
on the job yesterday and was warm
ing up the pitchers just as if he nad
bean out there all of the season—
says the Birmingham News.
As every one knows "Shot-Gun”
was with the Augusta club up until
a few weeks ago when President
Molesworth recalled him. Moles
worth exercised his option on "Jack"
Saturday and signed him to a con
tract for the rest of the season.
Wallace was making a name for him
self around this section by his most
accurate manner oT pegging the pill
to second. The Barons fire in the
running and now with the addition of
Wallace to the players’ line-up he's
expected to help a great deal—ls
Jack keeps tossing the sphere to
second Uko he did for the Combacks,
which there is no doubt that he will,
why the Barons are going to make
things hot. for their opponents.
Receiver Dilger. who, up until Sat
urday was the regular catcher for
Birmingham, was placed on the ineli
gible list by Molesworth who asked
ior waivers on him.
