TRIAL OF ‘’THE BAND OF
THE BLACK MASKS” IS ON
Paris.—The trial has just begun be
fore the assizes of Seine fnferieure of
18 men of the -Rand of the Black
Masks.” who for six months or more
terrorized the country district of Mn
romme in the neighborhood of Rouen.
A series of brutal murders and rob
beries lie to their charge.
The victims were all old men and
women living by themselves in soli
tary farms, who were set upon at
night and strangled or beaten to death
In no case was a knife or firearm
used. Panic siezed the countryside,
and nobody dared go out of doors at
night, till at last two members of the
band were surprised and recognized
as two dockers from the port of
Rouen. They were arrested, tried an 1
condemned but at the last moment
saved their lives by revealing the
names of their associates.
WHOLESALE IMPEACHMENT
THREATENING THE
GOVERNMENT
Peking. Wholesale . impeachments
are becoming the order of the day
and are threatening the whole gov
ernment. Three cabinet ministers,
two ex-ministers and two ex-tutuhs,
charged with corruption, will have to
take their trials before the adminis
trative court rendering the recon
struction of the various midistries in
evitable. Furthermore, the censors
are busily working up a case against
Yuan Shi-Kai and a former chief sec
retary, Liang Shi-Ki, whom many de
sire to see ruined.
Liang-Shi-Yi’s friends declare that
if the intrigues should crush him he
•"'ill make a clean breast of every se
cret maneuver since the beginning of
the revolution, which would form one
of the most amazing revelations ever
made. The general belief is that the
president cannot afford to have trials
in open court of an international scan
dal and that therefore the entir mat
ter will be hushed up, as the finan
cial position is sufficiently parlous
already.

SOCIALISM RAPIDLY
GROWING IN GERMANY
Berlin.—Socialism is growing in Ger
many. That is evidenced by the annual
repovt of the Executive Committee of the
Social Democratic Party, which triumph
antly announces that for the first time
the number of enrolled subscribing mem
bersbers has passed the million mark.
The party mus fV-roll shows 1.085.905
members, of whom 174,754 are v mien.
This consummation, a million of enroll
ed members, has been devoutly and
vainly wished for some three years past.
After the red elections of 19111 there was
a falling off in the rate of increase
among the male Veeruits. which was not
set off by the rapid growth of women
listed. The increase over lust year is
given at 10.5 per cent. As tiie party
reckons that the votes of enrolled mem
bers at elect! ns are only 25.5 per cent
of the total votes cast for the pavty, it
will he seen that a Socialist vote of
about four millions is expected whenever
the Government cares to dissolve the
Reichstag.
‘POTASH ANDPERLMUTTER’
TO SHOW IN BERLIN SOON
Berlin, —Montague Glass’ bewitching
comedy “Potash and Perlmutter," which
has carried London by storm, is to he
given here during the coming season.
I met the English producer Edward Lor
illurd, herr? a few days ago and lie told
me he had been looking over the situa
tion and had decided to try the German
field. He has some doubts about the
success of the purely dialect idea here
abouts.
“Most of these Germans talk just like
Abe and Mawruss,’’ he said, “when they
speak English, it wouldn’t be at all dif
ficult to get up any number of tour
ing companies in Germany to do our own
vtVslon of "Potash and Pearlmutter.”
If the play can be Germanied without
losing its American “bite" we will wel
come it with open arms. Comedy In the
the German theatre is at a high pre
mium and we are getting just a little
weary of the eternal operatte all the year
round.
A DISHEARTENING ADMIRER.
