CLARK DROVE IN TWO RUNS WINNING YESTERDAY'S GAME With Berger and Shaw on Base “Danny” Hit the Sphere for a Three Bagger. The Longest Drive Yet on the Homo Diamond. Winchell Pitched Beautiful Game% and Was Backed Up Nicely by His Team Matos. In a beautiful contest yesterday af ternoon the Combacks copped the final game of the series from the Charleston Sea Gulls by the score of 2 to 1, forging ahead of the Savannah "first-half" champions, back into the first division. When the words "beau tiful contest,” used above to describe the game, were typed on this page they were not put there Just because "we" won. No; not in the least, for the game was a most magnificent con test from the beginning until the end —quite sensational at the winding up. Winchell sawing out the whole side, Eldredge, Eberts and Manager Jim mie Hamilton himself. Ho there you are; that'B Just the article of ball that was put up yesterday and, incidental ly, In the games before, but somehow the locals were unable to score the winning run in the previous games. Fickle Fans. There’s many a fickle fan in this old town that will start to "crowing” about the manner In which the locals played in this game, who have been slinging the hammer all the time thm Manager “Babe” Brouthers’ set was defeated. Just think, if this game had been dropped, the noise that the hammer would be making. However, this particular game was registered In the win column of the Combacks. so there you are; no use thinking of what would have been. There’s no use talking, every man In Brouthers’ outfit was there and there with the goods at that. When little Danny Clark threw the pill wild a few days ago, letting one* of the enemy score, it was foretold by Tho Herald that he would redeem him self for this unusual occurrence end the result was that he did. The vis itors had gained a lead of one run In the sixth Inning (up until this In ning it looked like one of those score less games), HhavF and Berger were anchored on first and second respec tively. Clark stepped up to the plate and slammed out the longest and hardest hit ball that has never seen a precedent on this diamond before, scoring both runners and allowing himself to land safely on the third sack. Ebsrts* Fielding. If it hadn't been for the swiftness of Eberts It would have been a homer Winchell pitched one of those winning games of his and with the all-around hacking up of his team-mates. Kelly and Marker setting up as atari and WHADDAYAMEAN “HEAVY FIRING” the rest of his mates playing A< No. l ball, the net result was that but three of the visitors managed to get past the first station and but one of these as far as third, the last mentioned be ing Eberts, who scored. By capturing yesterday’s game It still goes to show that that set rs youngsters composing the local outfit can still put up a good argument. The box score: Charleston. AB. R. H. Po. A E. "I »tn afraid I shall never learn to rwlm ’’Why not?” “Everett won't let go of me long enough,” THE AUGUSTA HERALD, AUGUSTA. GA. (By J. H. 8.) Savannah was considerate enough to lose yesterday; the Combacks won, therefore Jumping back Into that first division. Brouthers evidently knows Ills business, making this team a first divisloner the first year out—The Co lumbia fans probably thought by fir ing the "Boy Manager" that the Comers would soar, well t hey did manage to crawl out of tho cellar, however, they managed to get no fur ther than sixth place—There's an ex ample; both these clubs started on Ihe same basis, yet “Babe" keeps his in the first division. Can you figure it out? There's fifteen more gajnes to be played, now with the majority of these registered in the win column, that Is, providing the Albany Babies hit the shoot, the local *:rew still have a chance to contest for that bunting— The Gulls and Foxes are not worry ing the Combacks Just at the present time. Don't give up hope, as yet, for that “bunting" one can never tell in baseball. Maybe Clark wasn't here yesterday with the hickory driving In the runs that tied up the score and defeated the Gulls at the same time. Clark’s a mighty good worker and it's not an unusual sight to see him pull this kind of a stunt —Remember, when the lad made a homer. —SL— “Iron Man" Winchell pitched the game of his life In this game, topping the occasion by sawing out the entire side of visitors In the last go-round. Hurrah for "Wnch.” Barker is still holding down fliat first station like a veteran and the fans are veil satisfied with the man ner in which he Is holding said posi tion. Johnnie Is also well pleased with this station and Intimates that he’s going In for first-baseman In the future "It'a more fun than twirling the pill." All the fellows on the |eam are now working like clockwork. Smith Bays that he's going to give one of his many friends a chance to capture this masterpiece. PROVED HIV CLAIMS. She looked at him doubtfully after the propoaal.
