STOLE It ON FREIGHT TRAIN Recorder Gives Three Negroes Twenty Days Each---Railroad and City Join to Enforce Law. The 601st section of the City Code says that It Is unlawful for persons to Jump on and off trains while 'n motion j and to ride freight trains, except per- ; sons who have business on them. This In not only against the law but such practices Are regarded as extremely I dangerous. A recent deplorable accident in which ' James Carter, a young white boy, lost his life from Injuries received from fad ing und<* a moving freight train In the vicinity of the Sibley mill, only empha izen the danger. It Is Apparent that anyone breaking this section of the code lays himself liable to serious injury If not death. The practice of Jumping on freight trains In the Georgia Railroad’! Harrl sonvllle yards has become such In the last few days that Special Agent BeiTy, of the Georgia Rallr<xid. called on the chief of police for the city’s assistance in putting a stop to It. Yesterday morning night. Watchman Dyer of the Ilarrleoirvllle yards was the chief witness against three negroes, each arraigned before Recorder Irvin for vio lating the 601st section of the citv code Each was fined $lO and cost or given ?0 days on the public works. The defend nts were Press Williams, James Barnes and Wm. Ixrwe. The latter’s fine was paid and he was released. The others were held. In trying the cases Judge Irvin re marked that the city is going to see that the practice of jumping on and off mov ing freight trains Is stopped and that the ordlnace prohibiting it be strictly en forced. The railway authorities say that they are being troubled with negroes throwing missiles at passing freight trains in the Harrlsonvllle yards. The yard conduc tor the other day was forced to lay flat down on top of a box car to keep from being struck by rocks thrown at the train. That any party found gutliv of j such offenses as this will not be dealt with lightly by the coxA*t, Is ihe state ment of the authorities. Pn n THE great blood purifier.
