FRIDAY, AUGUST 2T SPORTING NEWS AND GOSSIP SPORT ■HELL LOST HARD FOUGHT GiE YESMY AFTERNOON Sea Gulls Captured First Tilt of Series From. Combacks By a Two to Nothing:- --Mackert Wanting to Show the Augusta Boys “Up” Added to Smith Getting “Riled” Caused a Mix-Up Between Both Players, Finally Pulling Barker Into Fight Charleston, S. C.—The Sea Gulls "■on the first tilt of the series in this city yesterday afternoon with the Combacks by the score of 2 to 0. CftUiS for the Gulls twisted elegant baseball, allowing but three hits, one a ecratch in the ninth. Winched was a little wild. This game was one of the hardest contested seen on the local diamond in a long time, there being keen riv alry among the players to "show-up" one another. Sabrie and Mackert, both erstwhile Augusta players, were working like fiends throughout the game. Manager Brouthers put him self back in the game and was an other of the hard worker's. Mackert’s over anxiety to show the Augusta boys "up” added to Smith be ing provoked (claiming that Mackert attempted to spike hinr, or something like that) in the fourth inning while Mac attempted to steal third and was safe when Smith dropped the pill as tire player slid to the sacl . As Smith recovered the bail he deliberately threw it into Mackert’s side. The two players then engaged in a fisticuff. Whether there was an inkling of u triple alliance or something like that is not known, however, First Baseman Barker mobilized and joined in the merry war. About this time his “Umps" Vitter, not being a fight fan, yelled time, nnu by the way, in the meantime he coolly fined both Smith and Mackert $5 and banished them from the country for the time being. SPORT DOPE (By J. H. S.) Goodness Gracious! (or something to that effect) It's reported that Smith and Mackert mixed in a little fisticuff during yesterday's same. The real cause will not lie commented on as to the origin of said fight for The Herald merely has the Charleston shin of the affair. Judging front the dope that canto over the wire the boys must have been fighting for that game ves terdny—and fighting hard. However. It's nil right to fight, for a same, in a baseball way, hut de cidedly all wrong to attempt to push the other fellow's face "In" In the at tempt. By the way, just as an Incident, wouldn't It be fine to got up a little bout between Smith and Mackert (Id ting Barker be the referee) just to pass the time away during one of those winter days to come. It's true that Smith is a little heavier than Mac, however, Mac la decidedly more active than the Augusta outergardner, therefore the odds would be about even. Let's got together on tills prop osition, boys. It'll furnish a little amusement and also settle the grouch between the two pugilistic players.
