cotton situation during the past week so
far as reflected in local circles. A large
number of contracts have been running
out through the trancferriil of Interest
to December and changes have been
proposed in the by-laws to meet condi
tions created by the new cotton futures
bill, which may accelerate such opera
tions. No material prognss is expect

who are to sail for N« w York tomorrow
have been in conference with represen

Meanwhile nothing more than a few scat

general attitude of the trade is that cf
awaiting developments with reference to
new crop marketing, the export situation

RALPH DE PALMA
WINS AUTO HE
Elgin, lll.—Ralph lie Palma, hard
pressed by Gil Anderson, won the
f'obe Cup automobile race yesterday,
finishing the 305 miles In 4:05:00:1,
an average of 73.fi miles an hour. An
derson finished 44 seconds later, fol
lowed by Mulford In 4:08:16 and Old
field in 4:16:23.
lie Palma won the 1913 event when
his average speed was 66.8 miles an
hour. His fastest lap today was 6:06,
an average of 82.5 miles an hour.
Only nine of the twenty-two drivers
who strated finished.
Spencer Wishart took the pace early
and led without accident until the
twenty-first lap wht-g Vie blew a tire.
De Palma might have taken the lead
then, but for a similar aceident. With
a seemingly safe lead In the twenty
sixth lap, Wlshart’s fuel tank started
to leak and finally forced him from
the race,
Anderson had crept on the leaders
and shortly after Wishart’s accident,
passed De Palma. From then on I'
was a driver’s race. Anderson could
not gel the lead from his opponent,
hut his hard drive forced De Palma
into a race that lowered records for
many laps.
Through Bills Lading

Naw York.—Conferences here be
tween the foreign freight traffic man

Grain carriers refused to give other
than domestic bills of lading about
three weeks ago. The railroad and
shipping representatives will meet
again next week and If regular com
merce lias by that time become as
sured there will be no more difficulty
about billing shipments through tD

but went down Intact, leaving only a
hole.

neglects to read Herald adver
tisements misses many opportuni
ties to save money.
Often after she has made a pur
chase she will discover that the
same thing was advertised that
very day, by some progressive
merchant, at a great discount.
These are the days when you
should watch the ads—it’s the one
sure way to reduce the high cost
of living.
There is scarcely a thing among
personal or household needs that
is not being advertised this month.
But unless you read the adver
tisements daily you may miss just
what you desire most to see.
Read Herald advertisements to
day and every day.
