Some Yachtmen Thinks It’s Unfair To Sir Thomas Lipton to Make Changes in America’s Cup Defenders New York.—There is a well defined feeling here that the owners of the three American yachts which contest the honor of defending the American Cups should not make any pronounced changes in their bows now. as this would be un spcrtmanlike and unfair to Sir Thomas Linton. it been said that the postpone ment of the races for the America's Cup will enable the owners of the three de fenders which were built to make some radical changes In their forms before the races afe sailed. The Defiance was kept out of the trials sailed during the cruise of the New Ycfrk Yacht Club because the changes necessary to make her a success were so many and so extensive that they could not be made in time. Then the yacht was to be rigged witli a bowsprit a longer boom and a shorter mast and topmast. This too meant new suits and sails. It had also been suggested that the lead should be taken off and recast, so that the weight could he placed much lower, as it is on the Resolute and Vani tle. Faster. It has also been suggested that - the Vanitie could be made many minutes faster If about five feet over her counter were cut off. the rail removed and the weight, probably two tons, placed on the yacht's forefoot. This would hold her bow down more steadily and give her a better grip on the water when sailing in a rough sea with only a light wind. Whether these changes will be made is not known. Some yachtsmen think It would be unfair to the challenger to make any radical changes in the forms of the defenders. They were built to race against the Shamrock at a certain time, and the fact that the races are not to be sailed on time is no fault of Sir Thomas Lipton. TU might wish to make some big changes in his Shamrock IV but could not do so with the yacht In this country. These yachtsmen think that the best arrangement to lie made Is to let the challenger and defender lay up on this Rinp of the Atlantic for the winter, and then, when the dates for the postponed series are set, let each yacht be put into commission. The challenged can then he tuned up In these waters, and the Resolute and Vanitie can fight 1t out in trials to see which yacht shall be selected to defend the cup. Capt.
