The mayor received the party In the
council hall, where the register pre
pared the certificate of death. This

‘‘According to the statement of the
physicians and witnesses, Plux X died

Aug. 20, 1914.”
Twenty-three cardinals met late to
day to arrange the temporary gov
ernment of the church and prepare
for the conclave In September to elect
a new pope.
Cardinals Martinelli and D 1 Pietro
are 111 and unable to be present. Car
dinal Seraphin Vannutelll, dean of the
Sacred Cohere, attended, but, being
incapacitated by an Indisposition, the
duties of the dean were performed by
Cardinal Agllardl.
Take Oath.
After taking the oath to maintain
secret their discussions, ‘‘even to the
shedding of blood," the cardinals per
formed the traditional ceremony of
breaking the Fisherman's ring. The
rite, however, was not literally car
ried out. According to the rules of
the Sacred College the ring should be
broken and later reset and presented
to the new pope. Today after each of
the members present had Identified the
ring It was found that none had the
strength to break It, even though a
hammer was employed. Aid was not
at hand, as Cardinal Della Volpe had
not permitted the presence of any one
except the cardinals. The latter flna 1 -
ly decided that the symbolical cere
mony would be properly observed If
the symbol of office was scratched.
This was done.
It Is learned that the testament of
the late pope provides for the main
tenance of about 400 little ones made
orphans by the earthquake at Messina
and CalaVria in 1908.
Sister Is Better.
The pope’s sister, Anna, who col
lapsed when the pontiff died, was bet
ter today and inquired about the ar
rangements tor the funeral Saturday.
She insisted upon kneeling in bed to
pray for the departed soul.
The outer walls of all the churches
are placarded with notices from Car
dinal Potnpili, vicar general of his
holiness, stating that the chamberlain
had given him officially the sad news
of the death of Plus X on Thursdav
and Instructed him to ntoify all the
faithful and ordered that the bells in
all the churcll’s be tolled for one
hour at sunset Friday and on Sat
urday. The clergy also are directed
to say masses for the late pontiff,
"recommending his blessed soul to
God."

Certificate of
Pope's Death
Is Given Out
Statement Prepared By Dr.
Marchiafava Regarding Ex
act Hour of Pontiff’s Demise
Rome.—Dr. Marchiafava, one of the
two physicians who were at the death
bed of Pope Plus X, has given the As
sociated Press this statement:
“The pope died Thursday, August
20, about 1:16 in the morning.
(Signed! “B. MARCHIAFAVA.”
When informed of the claim made
In the United States that the pontiff's
death actually occurred prior to that
time, Dr. Marchiafava said he thought
it ridiculous in view of the fact that
there are plenty of witnesses who saw
the pope alive early Thursday morn
ing. These include such outside and
disinterested persons as Monsignor
Falconio, former apostolic delegate in
the United States, who at about mid
night of Wednesday insisted upon en
tering the Vatican, the doors of which
were closed. He was given admit
tance and remained in the pope’s bed
room for half an hour.
Dr. Andrea Amici, the other physi
cian in attendance, when told of the
American report said:
“I can give you the best of docu
ments showing the irrefutable truth."
Written Announcement.
He produced his own written an
nouncement of the death of the pontiff
to the mayor of Rome as follows:
“Most Illustrious Sir and Mayor:
“It is my sorrow to inform you to
day, August 20th, at the hour of 1:15
a. m., his holiness. Pope Pius X, known
secularly as Giuesseppe Sarto of
Riese, ceased to live in the Vatican
palace, from bronchial pneumonia,
aged 79 years. Dated Aug. 20, 1914.”
Prince Colonna, the mayor of Rome,
has ordered a special cover, richly
bound and lined with satin for the
death certificate. It bears the Rom?T»
coat of arms in the center and has
the following inscription in silver
letters.
“Death certificate of his holiness,
Pius X. Expired Aug. 20, 1914."
HARDWICK IKES
STATEMENT 10
6A. DEMOCRATS
Says Fully Two-Thirds of All
Voters of State Have Pro
tested Against Slaton’s
Nomination For Senate.
Atlanta. Ga. —Thomas W. Hardwick
issued the following statement to
day:
"To the democrats of Georgia:
“The official returns, practically
complete, show that while Mr. Slaton
has a small lead In delegates, that I
have run him a close second In the
number of delegates and I believe I
have received as many votes at the
ballot box as he has received.
“It must be remembered also that
every vote cast for any one of his op
ponents was a vote of protest against
Mr Slaton’s candidacy. Fully two
thirds of all the voters of Georgia have
protested against Mr. Slaton’s elec
tion to the senate and have insisted
that he fill out his two year contract
as Governor ‘without regard to the
enticement of a more alluring prize ’
“The combined vote of Mr.* Felder
and myself far exceeds that of Mr.
Slaton, even if Mr. Hutchens vote be
added thereto. This is true both as to
the popular vote and as to the conven
tion vote. Having a long lead, both
In popular and delegate votes over
any other progressive candidate, my
friends are naturally hopeful and con
fident of my final success.
“In any event the true democratcy
of this state may rest assured that
progressive democracy of Georgia and
the friends of the national administra
tion will organize and control the Ma
con convention and will' select two
progressive democrats as United
Senators from Georgia who are in
harmony with the Wilson administra
tion.”
