Sky High Prices For Drugs in
America; Germany, Chemist Shop
oi World, Temporarily Closed
Herald Reporter Learns From Augusta Druggists That Prices
Have Reached Very High Levels---All Drugs Go Up, and
This Brings Up the Question Why Can’t They Be Made in
America? *
The fact that Germany is the chem
ist shop of the world, and that it is
temporarily closed, may result in com
plications of a suprlsingly serious na
ture in this country. Nearly all of
our chemicals come from Germany.
With the exception of small indus
tries in Philadelphia and St. Louis
there is practically no production of
drugs in this country. All the iodine
preparations, for example, are import
ed.
A Herald reporter on Saturday in
terviewed a number of Augusta drug
gists and secured the Information that
drugs have advanced enormously in
price.
Of certain very important drugs
therefore there is at the present, mo
ment only a definitely limited amount
In the United States which eventually,
will be used up. Then America shall
have to go without those drugs until
the war is over. For instance neo sal
varsan, a preparation used ve.ry ex
tensively by doctors and one of in
calculable value, has been cut off en
tirely from the market. The price of
it, already enormous. ($3.50 a bulb)
has gone up to $7.00. Asperin, whioh is
all made in Germany, has gone up
from 75c. to $1 the ounce. And these
are only two of the many invaluable
medicines whose supply has been cut
off. That the prices of these should
advance is of course inevitable. Price
is determined by supply and demand.
The supply falls off, the demand re
mains the same, consequently the
price advances to point where the de
mand for the commodity falls off to
equal the supply. (For there will be
people willing to buy the article at the
advanced price, but they will be few
er than were willing to buy it at the
lower price.)
When the supply is cut off altogether,
therefore, we shall have to pay fam
ine prices. Only people who can't do
without will buy, and they will have
to pay whatever the owner chooses to
ask. It is therefore quite proper and
fair to raise prices on things that are
limited in quanttty; it saves the
things, as it were, for the people who
need them the most, who have to have
them at any price.
When the price has advanced to a
sufficiently high point, it will pay

Unreachable Neighbors
’ywo neighbors on the same street who are not conne-' 4
with the same telephone system are practically far apart.
The telephone users in the community who can be reached
by one are inaccessible to the other.
To reach them all means the inconvenience and added ex
pense of two telephones.
A community gets the best service from one good telephone
system which is linked up by toll and long distance lines with
the rest of the country.
somebody to set up factories to pro
duce them in this country, but this
cannot be done in a day. It takes time
to build, or enlarge, factories and to
train workmen in new r processes. The
outlook, if the war continues is not a
pretty one on this point.
(It might be remarked in passing
that asperin, above mentioned, could
be made just as well in this country
as in Germany; it is merely a prepa
ration of salicilic acid; but the name
asperin is patented, and we could not
use it on pill boxes of the home-made
article.)
Considering the matter further,
hmvever, and looking ovre the list of
advanced prices on drugs, one sees
another class of commodities on which
the price has gone up. Quinine, for
instance. This is imported, not from
Kurope but from South and Central
America. Why, it is asked, should the
price of quinine have gone up 10 pier
cent? The wholesale merchants will
tell you that it is because the quinine
is brought here in English ships But
surely this is no reason, is it? The
English ships engaged in the trade
between North and South America are
still running, aren’t they? Have they
gone to join the fleet in the North
Sea? Have the been sunk or captur
ed? There are no formidable German
warships in the south Atlantic to in
terfere with them. What is the ex
planation, then, of the advance on
quinine? None is offered here. Can
you think of one? Is it possible that
our great and eminent American
wholesale merchants are just taking
advantage of the general state of in
dustrial demoralization to make a lit
tle extra on the side? This is incon
ceivable, knowing how free we are
from graft in this happy land.
The following little episode will tend
to throw light on this matter.
Peroxide of Hydrogen, (H 202), has
gone up 100 per cent. It is manufac
tured in vast quantities by Park,
Davis and Co., In Detroit. When the
representative of that firm was in Au
gusta a day or two ago he was asked
by one of the leading druggists to
explain why the price of his stuff had
taken such a leap.
"Oh,” he "it's because

some of the ingredients have to be
imported from Europe.” (!)
Now, not being a chemist, the writer
may be sadly in error, but surely the
ingredients of Peroxide, as the formu
la H 202 would indicate, are oxygen
and hydrogen in equal parts.
Does America have to import even
tthese from Europe?
