TO RAZE ANTWERP TO
GROUND SAY GERMANS
AS MALINES RETAKEN
London, 4:25 a. m. —The Mail's cor
respondent at Roterdam sends a tele
gram from Antwerp dated Thursday
night which says:
"After a magnificent defense of two
days by the Belgian army Malines was
re-taken by the Germans.
"On the first day 20,000 Germans op
posed the Belgians and on the second
day 40,000 flung their might against
a greatly inferior force. In the end
the Belgians retired on Antwerp, leav
ing the enemy in possession of the
town. The Germans immediately en
trenched after ordering the inhabi
tants to leave. Wachten and Heindo
niek were destroyed by the retreating
Belgians to prevent their being used
as a cover by the enemy in their oper
ations against Antwerp.

Germans Furious.
"Refugees at Roozendaal say the
Germans possessed amazing knowledge
of the roads. The German attack on
Malines was furious and Inspired by
a desire to end the sorties which the
Belgians were making from the town
against their trenches and around
Brussels.
“The Belgians had made successful
attacks on the German lines of com
munication and had seriously hamp
ered their operations. This necessi
tated the return of the fourth German
army corps, which had already started
for the south.
“Sixty thousand Belgian refugees
fled from the town. The Germans are
furious at the Belgian operations and
declare they will raze Antwerp to the
ground in revenge.”
