Crop Conditions
Around and
v in Cordova
•
Cordova, S. C.—The condition of va
rious crops in this community are con
ceded to be pretty good. Corn is bet
ter than it has been for years and
an abundant crop will be harvested.
The fodder gathered was pretty badlv
damaged by rain.
Cotton is opening rapidly and some
being sold at from 8 to 10 cents. The
farmers who can hold it are going to
do so. Some think prices will stiffen
later. The crop won’t near come up
6# last year's. In some fields it >s
large enough but the fruit is not there
and where last year cotton would have
made a bale to the acre this year it
will take three or four acres to make
a bale. "Would say the yield is off
at least twenty-five per cent.
A large crop of pea vine hay will
be made if the weather clears up so
it can be cured. Some fields are waist
high and growing right on. More at
tention is being given to cattle raising
in this vicinity than formerly, not on
any great scale, but everyone is trying
to raise as many beef cattle as pos
sible. Several new ginneries are being
built and the people appear determined
to go ahead in spite of the war in
Europe.
The protracted meeting at “Wesley
,-Grove” has closed. Our pastor, Rev.

CROPS AROUND HEPHZIBAH j
NOT WHAT WAS EXPECTED
crops throughout
this community are not what the peo
ple wmld have them. The early corn
and Litton crops were cut short by
*u, long drouth. The hall and rai l
i ised a large amount of the fodder
be left in the field ungathered. Quite
t number of the farmers have a good
I rt of their crops in late corn and
c tton. They had great hope and
I ight prospects for a large yield from
t *ir late crops up until the last few
d ys of hot sultry weather, which has
p tctically ruined both com and cot
t( i. Where the farmers had velvet
b ms in their corn the corn seems to
be much better and they have an ex
ct ent crop of forage besides. The
hi - crops are suffering very much
be ause of the dry weather during the
lai few days. The farmers are quite
bu y gathering what littel cotton they
ha e and are preparing to put in large
cri is of rye, oats, wheat .etc. Some
ar thinking of putting in vetch and
clc er with these crops.
8p PER CENT FULL CROP
BTIMATE FOR EDGEFIELD
Edgefield, S. C.—For Edgefield coun-
cotton crop condition Is con- |
sentitively estimated at 80 per cent |
of toe full crop. The crop this year j
is spotted on account of the
dromh up until July. This condition I
Is on the presumption that sea- I
pons will be favorable from now on.
The born crop is below the norma' !
condition and 80 per cent represents
this crop also.

ACTUAL MEASUREMENT OF
RURAL MAIL ROUTE;
MILAGE
Lincolnton, Ga.—Under the amend
edautomobile act, passed by the legis
lature at its recent session, provision
is made for the compilation of rural
mail route mileage in each county by
the county commissioners or the ordi
nary, where there is no board, and it
must be done by actual' measurement.
The act specifies that this informa
tion must be in the hands of the sec
retary of state by or on September 1,
3914, so Col. Cook has just sent out a
letter and blank form to each coun
ty, calling attention to the require
ments.
In addition he is sending a copy of
the new law. There is now in the
state treasury about $95,000.00 await
ing ditsribution to the counties for
good roads as soon as information can
be compiled and the proper appor
tionment of the fund made.
The new act provides that when in
formation is supplied the secretary of
state that as much as ten per cent of
the auto owners of a county have fail
ed to return their machines for taxa
tion such county shall not be paid Its
pro rata part of the fund for that
year. County commissioners and of
ficials are charged with the duty of
securing this information.
The house ways and means commit
tee recommended a reduction In the
registration fee from $6 to $2 but the
house voted it down. The fee, there
fore, will continue at $5 per annum.
County officials will have a big job
in securing and sending in informa
tion about rural mail routes by Sep
tember Ist.
