Twice as Many Men Engaged and Deserves Far Higher in
History. Most Terrible, Awe-Inspiring Day.
London, 4:2? p. m.—A Chronicle correspondent from an unnamed
point In France, describes the great battle near Mons on Augusta 26th.
He says:
"An officer told me It was a terrible day. I think the Germans knew
that there was an opportunity to w ipe out the British force and they
brought up vast numbers of their best and freshest men.
“'lt was really the first occasion in history on which a battle has
taken place between a German and a British army and I think when we
ran read its story as we can that o f Waterloo, it will be found that that
battle, In which twice as many men were engaged as at Waterloo, de
serves far higher place purely as a military achievement.
"It was someth.ng really awe-lnspiring, another officer said, to see
those terrific German rushes.
"When you saw a rush start, ne declared, you thought nothing on
earth could stop it. That these tremendous charges were stopped and
the attacker driven hack in disorder is due In the first place to the mag
nificent markmanshlp of the British Soldiers"
