day the cruiser Suffolk within view of
shore observers at. the Highlands
rhased the Van Hogendorp of the At
lantic Fruit Line, flying the Dutch
flag. Upon sighting here the Suffolk
displayed signals ordering her to stop
Instantly. The Van Hogendorp was
then several miles off and her offi
cers either did not see the Suffolk's
signals pr disregarded them.
Within a mlnu • the cruiser gave
chase. Shore observers saw the span
of water between the two craft grow
shorter rapidly. Presently the Van
Hogendorp stopped; a small boat, put
out from the cruiser and officers
boarded the steamer. Forty-five min
utes later the small boat returned and
the Suffolk sent the International
code message "T. D. L.” which means
"wish you a pleasant voyage.”
The Norwegian steamer Obldense,
bound for Jamaica also was chased by
the Suffolk but paid no attention to
the cruiser’s repeated signals to stop
as she was within the three-mile
limit. The cruiser chased the steam
er for an hour and finding then that
the Obldense still held her course
close to the shore abandoned the pur
suit and headed off shore.

Kaiser’s Forces Have Weight,
the Allies Wit and Science
London, 3:39 a. m.—A Dally News
correspondent despatch from Goumey
en-Bray, near Rouen, says:
"The German advance Is amazing.
A great battle Is raging, with what
result I know not, but I do know that
the French and British armies are In
tact and still confident of ultimate
success.
"Incredible as It seems, the tremen
dous masses of men that the Germans
have hurled at the allies have not
overwhelmed them. It seems that
while the Germans have the weight the
allies certainly have the wit and sci
ence and these, with reinforcements,
will eventually win.
