THE AUGUSTA HERALD, AUGUSTA, GA.
PRESIDENT PLEASED
HARDWICK’S VICTORY
Dispatched Telegram of Con
gratulations to Him. Senator
Kern Says Hardwick is Able
and Loyal to Party
Washington.—The nomination of
Congressman Hardwick for the United
irbates senate by the Democrats of
Ceorgla wur pleaslnsr alike Io l’reai
.l* lit Wilaon, the members of his cab
inet and all true friends of the ad
ministration in Washington, not to
mention the Democratic members in
the senate and house of representa
tives
The president, early this morning,
dispatched a telegram of congratula
tions to Mr. Hardwick,
Senator John W. Kern, in Indiana,
Democratic leader of the senate, said:
"The nomination of Congressman
Hardwick was gratifying to the Dem
ocrats of the senate. I have known
Mr. Hardwick for a number of years,
and am familiar with his work in the
house I am a great admirer of his
ability and loyalty, and will Join with
other Democrats in giving him a cor
dial welcome.”
Tiie news of Hardwick's nomina
tion was received with urircstrained
pleasure in the house of representa
tives. His success was known within
a few minutes after the fourteenth
ballot was taken and the expression
of pleasure was universal. Every
one agreed that ‘ Hardwick's promo
tion" to the senate would make for
the general legislative efficiency of
the upped house.
As a trained parliamentarian and an
experienced legislator closely attentive
to his duties and ever watchful for the
interest a of, his constituents, Hard
wick is equipped for immediate ser
vice in the senate.
COUNTY UNIT nil 101
ENDORSED HI MACON
First Drafts of Platform Con
tained Endorsement of it, But
it Was Not Adopted
Atlanta, Ga. —No reference to the
enmity unit plan was contained in the
pint form adopted by the state IJemo
ei title convention at Macon. The draft
of the platform submitted to the reso
lutions committee did carry such a
paiagraph, but after consideration the
committee voted to strtke it and this
was done.
Copies of the platform obtained by
the newspaper representatives con
tained this paragraph and in the tush
and excitement prevailing at the con
vention the omission of the paragraph
was overlooked and II was published
in the various newspapers of tlie state.
Thus ttie- public was led to believe
that such a paragraph had been
adopted.
Colonel Kb T. Williams, of Atlanta,
Chairman of the resolutions commit
tee which prepared the platform, is
sued the following explanatory state
ment Thursday:
"As chairman of the resolutions a*!
platform committee, at the Macon
convention. I wish to state that there
vas mi error made by the newspapers
of (lie state in reporting the same.
"\Ye discussed the county unjg plan
adopted by the last convention and
agreed that we would not offer It as
a part of the platform. The press,
however, printed it although it lias
been erased and marked ‘‘omitted."
The platform rend to the convention
and adopted by it did not contain the
count v unit paragraph which was
printed In the press.
"We discussed it at length and de
cided to leave it to the new executive
committee to investigate and report
later hs to It.
