Decoration Which Every French Wife Hopes Her Soldier Will Earn London. —Details of the feat which brought the first Cross of the I.eglon of Honor—the decoration which every French wife or • weetheart hopes her soldier will earn—have just been re ceived here. The hero of the occasion Is Lieutenant Bruyant, a young dragoon officer. The lieutenant and six men were scouting near the frontier about 2:30 o'clock on a hot afternoon. Of course the place where the Incident took place, Is not permitted to be mentioned. Suddenly a good way off they saw a patrol of twenty-seven Uhlans, the Ger man light cavalry. The Frenchmen were Impatient to bo after them In spite of the disparity In numbers, but Bruyant was too capable a leader to rush In blindly. With good shooting, the Frenchmen managed to bring down tw'o Germans, and then the Uhlans cantered away. They were four to one. but for some reason did not wish to fight. Probably they were Simply seeking information. Followed-Up. The French followed up resolutely. The Germans kepi their distance. When the lira goons trotted, the Uhlans trot ted too. Now the former would gallop across a hit of open country. The Germans wotdd gallop away Just as quickly. Evidently they were making for shelter. Soon Bruyant saw that they were try ing to reach a wood where they could lake cover. There was no time to be lost. He know that If they got there they would escape him. Now whs the moment to unchain the ardor of his men He gave ordtrs to draw swords and charge. The seven spurred their horses and fell upon the twenty-seven with shouts of defian«c. The shock demoralised the Germans. They made no stand at all. One was killed by a lance thrust. The officer In coniaml was drawing his revolve*, when Bruyant cut him down with his sabre. Six more were wounded and knocked off their horses. The rest fled in disorder. ' The fight only lasted a minute.
