Repulsed by Germans. "As a matter of fact events proved indubitably that the Germans repulsed ;he Belgian softie. During this en gagement the Germans in Louvain were attacked, unquestionably in pur suance of an organized plan in dif ferent parts of the city. This hap pened after the Germans had been in pleasant relationship with the inhabi tants of Louvain for more than twen ty-four hours. "This attack was first made upon a battalion of the landstrum, compoeed BRITISH CRAFT SENT TO THE BOTTOM German Cruiser Sinks Nitrate Freighter in Addition to Eng lish Warship Off St. Lucia Island New York.—The Bowen Castle, a British freighter, has been sunk by (he Karlsruhe, according to a cable gram which was received b.r J. F. Whitney and Company, steamship agents, the captain and crew of the Bowes Castle were taken off before the guns of the cruiser ser.t her to ;he bottom. They were safely landed at Maranhao. The Boses Castle was built in 1913 at Sunderland. England, and was 4,650 tons gross register. She sailed on July 20 from Coronel, Chile, for New York with a cargo of nitrate of soda. IS FUGITIVE AT BUTTE. Butte, Mont.—President, McDonald, •if the mine workers' union, a fugitive .-from the national guard since mar tial law was declared, has sent a let ter to a newspaper denying rumors i irculaled here since he disappeared. McDonald writes that Joe E. Bradley, vice president of the union and two other men are with him; that they are armed with pistols and rifles and re well supplied with money. Mc- Donald says lie would surrender If he knew 'hat he would be released on bail and bt tried by a military court. SEE WINDOW DISPLAY principally of middle-aged and peace ful men, themselves fathers of fami lies. With Rifle Fire. ‘•Others attacked included members of the staff of the commanding gene ral. The Germans lost numbers of dead and wounded. Nevertheless they gained the upper hand with the help of newly arrived troops, who them selves were greeted with rifle fire at the railroad station. “An investigation is under way, the result of which will be made public. The truth of the statements made in the foregoing is beyond all doubt. The Hotel de Ville was saved from fire. Efforts to extinguish the flames else where were unavailing." In Humanity’s Interest. The Allegemeine Zeiturig adds: ‘‘The German minister at The Hague has been Instructed to ask the Dutch government to urge the Belgian gov ernment in the interest of humanity to stop the civil population of Belgium from continuing a resistance which is so completely futile." WILL AFFORD EMPLOYMENT TB THOUSANDS Ship Registry Act Explained By Acting Secretary of De partment of Commerce.—4o Steamers For South America Washington.—Acting Hoc. Sweet, of the Department of Commerce, today made this explanation of the new reg istry regulations: "The ship registry act and the ex ecutive order do not deprive even one licensed tman of a job he now holds. On the contrary, it will open many chances of employment hereafter for such men. * "Furthermore, it will enable thous ands of Americank. who were In some risk of losing their work on account of the war's effect on foreign com merce, . industry and agriculture to keep employed. These men range from stevedores who load ships at the docks, through the railroad employes who move the freight, back to those employed at centers of production throughout the country. "The applications for American reg istry which collectors of customs are beglnlng to receive. Indicate that within a fortnight or three weeks, about forty steamers will lake out American reglstiy for triple with South America and Central America, and more for trade with other parts of the world. Applications for regis ters for ten large cargo steamers for South American trade were to be filed in New York this morning." SCHNEIDER’S ATTACKS BRITISH NEWS CENSORSHIP London Times in Editorial Today Compares English and German Accounts of Unprecedented Crisis—Scientific Pre paration and Dissemination of Falsehoods London, —The London Times today editorially deals with the British system of censoring news dispatches. It calls attention to the fact that the German government lias always un derstood the value of presenting its own news to the public abroad and says: “Englishmen are apt to regard this kind of propaganda with contempt. They tielieve that truth will prevail over untruth no matter liiw scien tifically falsehood may be spread. In the long run their confidence Is no doubt their confidence is Justified, hut in the present circumstances the prac tice of giving lies too long a start may be attended by serious draw backs. Justifiable Anxiety. “Our government in Its justifiable anxiety to prevent transmission from this country of nevys that might he of assistance to the enemy has estab lished a severe censorship on sll out going telegrams and has thereby nec essarily caused great delay in their transmission. "Constant and well founded com plaints have been made by dozens of Italian and American correspondents of the treatment of their messages. It appears that in some cases these are detained from 12 to 24 and even 48 hours by the British censor. No Time to Be Lost. "No time is to be lost If this re gretable and indeed dangerous situa tion is to he remediel. It is not too much to ask that our government should spare neither pains nor money to insure that ccutrafcountries whose attitude at critical moments may be of vital importance shall not be left without, authentic and veracious in formation. “The country has now been at war SUITS - SUITS The biggest values ever offered. $9.75, values SIB.OO. $14.75, value $26.00. $19.75, value $30.00 to $85.00. Patriotic Duty. "In time of an unprscendentsd crisis the press has a great patriotic duty to perform. Germany Is well aware of the potent influence of the press and uses it to the uttermost. "We commend to attention the fuo simile we published today of a com munication purporting to emanate from a member of the Times staff, a person who has never extsteo. Tills unscrupulous communication has been published In hundreds of newspapers in western America. Innumerable Examples. "We could quote Innumerable ex amples of (lie kind. One reason why Turkey is on the verge of war is that Constantinople is swamped by Ger many with fabrications about alleg ed British and french reverses. An other example we quote shows that the German and Dutch press is now being mobilised for efforts to iletaeli France from the entente. Germany has even approached the Times and other English newspapers, offering for publication Ibe reports of her general staff upon the military ope rations. “Our government has (lone nothing to counteract these activities We have received from Petrograd infinitely more Information than from our own war office.” RECEPTION BY POPE.
