BILLY PIG AND THE PRESERVEB.
Hilly Pig’s .mother had been pre
serving all the morning and when
she went to town in the afternoon
she told Pilly Pig to keep a close
watch on the closet where she put
the jars
Hilly Pig watched her out of sight.
Then he opened the door to t!»o clos
et. "She won't mind If I Just count
the Jars." he said.
Then he did a very wicked thing
He took a Jar from the shelf and
opened It. First he smelted it, then
he tasted. He tasted again and again,
and by and hv It was ail gone. II«•
wondered what he should do with the
empty Jar If he left It on the shelf
she would find It and know he had
eaten It.
'Til put It hf-hlnd the hushes in the
garden." said naughty Hilly Pig.
Now. it happened that Hilly Goat
had seen Billy T'ig's mother go down
the mad. and he though he might find
Hilly Pig alone, so he trotted toward
Billy Pig's house and saw him go out.
"I wonder what lie is carrying?"
said Billy Gnat. ’Til watch and see
where he goes."
After Hilly Pig had hidden the Jar
in the garden Hilly Goat went and
looked.
"Ho my fine fellow,* 1 he said, "you
have been eating your mother’s pre
serves. I shouldn’t mind haring n
taste myself; Mother Pig can cook
nice preserves/’
He waited until Hilly Pig hud been
in the house a few minutes and then
he knocked at the door.
"Kow-dy-flo?" said Hilly Pig. but
tliil not ask Hilly Goat to come In
Hilly Goat waited and after being
sure he was not to he invited to enter
he said. "I smelled some very do*
licious preserves cooking tills morn
ing as I passed. 1 should think we
might have a nice little feast while
your mother is away. Where does she
keep them. Billy Pig?"
"Oh* 1 should not dare touch 'moth
er's preserves, ’’ replied Hilly Pig
looking very serious.
"You don’t tell me so.” said Hilly
Goat. "What is that on the front of

Billy Pig. as he watched Hilly Goat go

When his mother came home Hilly
Pig told her how Hilly Goat came and
teased him to take her preserves.
"Me certainly is a had fellow," said
ids mother as she spread the table
and put on the pear preserves for Hil

Hilly Pig was looking with longing

knock was heard at the door.
Mis mother opened tr and there
flood Hilly Goat with the empty Jar
tn his hand
"1 think. Madam Pig," he said, look

this is your Jar; I found it behind the

saw Hilly IMg put it there and I guess

he asked.
Hilly Pig looked very guilty, and
when his mother stood before him
With the empty Jar he began to cry.
“Sn this is tin* way you look after
things when I am away,** sk «* said,
reaching for the stick behind the
clock.
Billy Goat was waiting out In the
road, and when he heard Hilly Pig
squeal he laughed and trotted off to

come up before him and sing. This
they did, hopping out of the circle anil

the season's work which was to get

leaves so they would drop down easily
when the first frost came.
Every tree must also be cleaned of
all bugs and motlia and made ready
for the winter month* and for spring
when the new leaves must be helped
to grow and make the trees beautiful

After the toads had been divided Into
companies, each company with a lead
