EIGHT Burke and Emanuel County Farmers Optimistic Citizens of Midville Too Busy Budding a Rapidly Growing Town to Worry About Hard Times---Less Cotton, More Hog and Hominy From .Now on. Midvilla, Ga, —lt you should chance to be traveling on the Central of Geor gia or the Georgia and Florida and happen to come to a town called Mid ville—which you will certainly do If you travel long enough on either road —and It came to pass that you got off the train at this point, there would be two things that would happen to you immediately. First, your attention would be at tracted by the unusunl activity going on In every direction and, a aeon d, y >u would automatically get on an In creased wiggle to keep from Iwlng run over. Other towns may slumber and dream peacefully in the sun, not Mid ville. Of all the enterprising towns In Georgia—and there are a few- Midville Is so far ahead of the rest in tJio mat ter of growth that the cltlz*ti* cannot get the rubbish from one new build ing cleared up before another starts. Waterworks and Sewerage. Probably the most important thing which has heen done In the way of (gaprovenirnts Is the new waterworks fed!) sewerage system Which is Just being completed at a cost of about 122,000. A five-hundred-foot artesian well furnishes an ample flow of the purest of water, contributing vitally toward the general health of the com munity. The hundred-foot stand-pipe which puts running water In the homes gives a good pressure nil over town and fills a long-felt want. » In the residence section during the past year, over fifty homes have been erected. Anrruig them might be men tioned those of Mrs. Corrlne Jones, Mr. J. B Murphy, Mr. H. A. Ay.new and Mrs. 1,. A Kirk man. Mr. FI. W. Brooks has lately completed a very pretty bungalow for Ills own use, and Mr. J G. Renfroe has put up several at tractive tenement houses. New Bank. One of the most attractive new buildings In the business section is that of tile Farmers and Merchants Bunk, which is a two-story structure, built of white pressed brick, and of the most modern bank construction. This bank, which Is still in the first year of Us existence, has been doing a very successful business ever since it was fet gantzed. It is capitalized at (25,000, Mr. L It. Farmer of Louisville being tlie president. Mr. T. 11. Wall Is vice president, and Mr. K. W. Brooks, cashier. ■"-O - - Across from the bank, on the cornet of Jones and Trout streets, is a double store which was built by Mr. J. A. Asher and which Is also of white pressed brick. One of these stores is occupied by the Midville Furniture Co. and the other by Asher Bros. Department Store. The R. C. Neely t'o., which for the past four years have been doing the largest supply business In southeast Georgia, came to the conclusion some time since that they had outgrown their old quarters. Accordingly, they pulled down the old buildings and put up a line of nine modern one-story Stores which will cost about 520.000 when finished. They are of gray pressed brick with palte glass fronts and present a very handsome appear ance. in addition to these, Mr. Thoa. Tt Slappey of Ravannah lias renovated hlj two brick stores on the corner of Jones and Broad streets; Mr. It. M Murphree has put up u new brick store which lie occupies with a gene ral merchandise stock, and Mr. J. H. Drew has made a number of improve ments in Ills place of business. Mrs. K. A. Harris lias also built a couple of two story buildings which •re «i present occupied by W. FI. Bax ter mid the Midville !>rug Company. For the accommodation of its pas sengers. the Georgia and F'lorlda Rail road has lately built a new depot. This building, which Is a wooden] structure with a tile roof, not only makes a very good appearance, but adds greatly lo the comfort of the traveling public. _ A great deal of work Is also being done lu the way of excavating s space for enlarging tlielr freight yard, the I present yard being too small to ac I commodate tile large amount of cotton which is handled every fall. Fertiliser Plant. Midville has ene of the largest and most complete fertiliser plants in the stute. Tile Central Fertilizer Co. was completed at a cost of (500,000 In time for the last season, ami did a most successful business. They have also put up a large gin this year which right at this lime is doing all the work It can handle. There are now two lurge gins In Midville which have a. combined capacity of a hundred and fifty bales a day. Near the fertiliser plant. Mr. J. H. Higdon recently erected a saw and plaining mill which haa been doing a good business furnishing the wood work for new buildings Farmers Optimistic. While the farmers around Midville are as busy as they can be gathering in on# of the best cotton crops this (section has seen In a long time, still there has been very little cotton sold, •o far. Pretty well all the farmers are viewing the present depression tn as optimistic a light as possible, real ising that there must be a demand for ) cotton which will put it up to a rcas i onab’e price again as soon as tt can be transported to European mills. Thev ■fey they are going to swing to what they have as long as they* possibly can and after that hold on a little lunger anyway Just for luck and that they aspect things to boom when they on.'e feet started. The merchants and hanks are ear ing for the farmers as much as pos sible, advancing goods and money to the value of eight cents a pound on WarehouM* receipts. That the cotton growers are taking advantage of this plan is evidenced by the fact that not only the old warehouse of the Midville Warehouse Co., but also the new ware house of the R, C. Neely Oo„ with a capacity of two thousand hales, is rap idly filling up with bales stored •gainst a better market. What Mr. Brooks Says. When asked what he thought of the situation, Mr. Brooks, cashier of the Warm err and Merchants Hank, sail; “So far as things have gone at pres ent, we have never thought affairs wars get tin* luftUueuUy serious to worry over. We can sec but. one out come and tba(, is an ultimate increase In business and general prosperity for this country beyond what we have had In a number of years. At present, It Is merely a case of sitting tight in the boat. "Throughout this section we are as stirred of a hearty co-operation be tween the farmers, bankers and mer chants in helping each other tide over the present crisis. This bank is ad vancing money on warehouse receipts at the rate of eight cents the pound, and we do not feel that we are taking chances at that. We are advising all of our custom ers to hold their cotton, mid they seem to be doing It. Farmers here will tell you that cotton Is only about seven and t. half cents, but if you start out to buy at that price, there will he a different tale to tell. You won't find any for sale. More Hog and Hominy. “In one way the situation we are up against at present Is going to do this section a lot of good. That sounds a little tough now, hut if the farmer.-, learn not to depend too much on cot ton, a great deal will be accomplished toward their individual independence. The land In Burke and Emanuel coun ties is capable of raising nearly every thing needed by the people who live upon It, and If the farmer will pay more attention to hog and hominy he will be better able tn sit In the shade of his scuppernong vine and let the worll wag until he can get a Just and reasonable price for Ills cotton.
