SOUTHERNERS AGAINST IT.
Washington.—Several Southern and
Western Democrats initiated the pe
j tition against a freight tax for reve
nue. They proposed as an alternative
an increase in the tax on beer, whis
key, other distilled liquors and possi
bly automobiles and other luxuries.
A freight tax they declare, would af
fect ail the necessities of life, par
ticularly the food products.
