MISS HITE'S RURAL SCHOOL
WORK APPRECIATED
THROUGHOUT EDGE
FIELD COUNTY
Edgefle J, S. C. —Miss Mary Eva Hite,
the president of the State Rural School
Improvement Association, spent last
Week In Edgfield county, visiting the va
rious country schools, within reach of
this base, and preaching the gospel of
consolidation for the betterment of edu
cation in our rural communities. By
consolidation a stronger school is crea
ted from tv j or more weak ones—with
a longer term—and consequently better
teachers, for .10 mo teacher can handle
effectively all the grades from primary
to tenth grade work. Whenever the
school embraces a thinly settled commu
nity, school wagons go from house to
house collecting the children and carry
ing them back and forth daily.
In these model schools she is interest
ed in, pecuniary assistance is guaranteed
by the state whenever the building is
put up according to approved plans,
which plans are furnished free of cost,
as well as plans fob beatifying the
school grounds.
Miss Hite gave 1 talk at every school
she visited, as well as in our town, and
in nearly every place was assured of
hearty interest and co-operation among
the patrons. While it may be some
time before tills development system Is
perfected, let us hope that her work will
bear (vuit, and our old county, which is
behind the more progressive ones, may
soon forge to tlu front In educational as
well us business lines.

AIKEN 7 MEN, WHILE ON FOX
HUNT, FIND ALIGATOR
NEST
Aiken, S, C.—Messrs. A. W. Reynolds
and Jason Woodward found an aligator’a
nest last Thursday morning near Has
kett’s old mill vhile out fox hunting.
The nest had thirty-five eggs in it and
Mr. Reynolds took them home ar.d says
that he thinks that within n few days
he will he able to supply his friends with
aligators. The nest had the appearance,
he states, of a heap of straw or hay,
and was several feet in circumference at
the bottom but narrowed to a point at
the top. The nest was composed of
straw and dirt and it is suposed that the
lieat effected by the »tecay of the vege
table matter, causes the eggs to hatch.
Mr. Reynolds says that he is using the
same process on the eggs he carried to
his farm.
