German Ambassador Replies
to Statement of Winston
Churchill Regarding Peace
Proposals and Volunteers.
New York—Count von Bernatorff. Oer
man ambassador to the United Staten.
Issued a statement today In refernoe to
a recent speech by Winston Churchill,
first lord of the British admiralty, in
the house of commons:
"Mr, Winston Churchill’s speech," the
statement read, "the violence of which
fnay perhaps he excused by his wish to
raise volunteers, tries to convey the
opinion that the peace movement In the
Unltd States and peace proposals have
been started by me. f. therefore, wish
emphatically to state that I have taken
absolutely no initiative in this matter,
imd that whatever peace suggestions
have come to my knowledge hove al
ways been started by the American gov
ernment or by distinguished Americans."
fount von Bernslorff received from his
government today this official communi
cation:
{ Jews Brutalized.
"According to reliable Galician sources,
the Russians have brutalized the Jewish
inhabitants in all pieces which they
have occupied in Galicia. They Incite
the Kuthenlan Peasant population
against the Jews and hand over to them
Jewish property and that of Polish land
owners most of whom have tied the
country. ( ruelties oommitteed on Jew
ish Inhabitants by the Russians become
worse and worse each day. This con
trasts remarkably with the Czar's mani
festo to his beloved Jews.
"It has been said that the export of
goods from Germany is not possible, and
that consequently neutral countries
should get goods heretofore imported
from Germany from other countries. The
passage of goods over German railroads
has been resumed and there Is no rea
son why goods should not be exported
with the exception ,of course, of those
the export of which has been forbidden
because of the war. The export trade
of Germany will be resumed In a large
measure In the future."
INSPECTION OF
LOUVAIN REPORT
German Committee Says Dam
age Done Much Exaggerated.
World Famous Art Works
Saved.
Berlin, (vi» The Hague and London)
The committee appointed by the
Herman governor of Brussels to care
for art treasures has Just turned In
a report of an Inspection of Louvain.
The committee says It la apparent
the damage done to the church, town
hall (Hotel da Vllle) and the library
of Louvain has been exaggerated.
All the works of art now ore In the
town hall which was not damaged at
all. The church of Kt. Pater lost part
of Its roof and there are small holes
In the vaulted ceilings of St. Michaels
Church and St, Jacobs. St. Hubert's
Chapel and the Church of St. Ger
trude are Intact, according to the
committee.
The facade of the beautiful univer
sity was damaged, but it will lie pos
sible to repntr it Ahaut one-sixth of
the city was destroyed. All of Depot
Street, the buildings about the Place
du Peuple and the houses about the
townhall and St. Peters were dyna
mited by order of the commandant to
prevent the flames reaching the town
hall.
German officers saved pictures from
St. Peters while the roof of this
church was burning. Among these
paintings were the famous "Last Sup
per," "the martyrs" and the “martyr
dom of St. Kramus," which are abso
lutely undnmaged.
In Liege all the art treasures are
intact, according to the committee.
In the Church of St. Paul one window
was slightly damaged. The contents
of the museum were placed in safety.
The Collegiate Church has not been
damaged, and Its four relic shrines,
according to the clergy have been
taken to Antwerp.

Last Night’s Play
The muchly touted musical comedy.
"Oh! oh! Dolphins" played at the
Grand last night before a large au
dience. It la In the aouth for the first
time after successful runs In New York

seemed to please an Augusta audience
tremendously. The walta between

course, the men can get up and go out,
and the majority of thorn do. They can

relax themselves, but aa for the ladles
there 1b no relief Aa the producers
wish to please the public. It would
aecm that they would have no show
over two houra and a half and no waits
between acts of over ten minutes. The
time Is coming when the shows will
not keep open after 11 o'clock, for that
la late enough, eapeclally when bust
neaa people are expected to get to
work at eight a. m. the next day.

some of the other high class musical
comedies or operettas "Oh! Oh! Del

Msxlme Girl" by Simone and chorus
was extremely good. "Tan we e'er for
yet" by Dolphins and Jolllbeau, was
splendid. The song hit of the evening,
however was by Rouchotte and the
housemaids entitled "Everything's tt
home except your wife." and "The
Venus Waltg" by Jolllbeau and Rlm

vivid reminder of "My Hero" in "The
Chocolate Soldier,” one of the most
appealing and most passionate love
songs heard here in a great many
years.

magnificent oriental costumes and
beautiful face and aplendtd figure.
Indeed, she had a left shoulder which
would stand the microscopic teßt of
the most critical artist and Venus was
complete when Blmboula was discover

dozen models in hts charge. Miss Al

and the part of Simone, her despised
rival, was ably played by Miss Mabel
Allen. Maurice Darcy, as Col. Poin

song of the flower girl, "Oh. lock up
your wife when the colonel comes
around," was one of the hits of the
performance.
There were all kinds of ridiculous
situations u„d plenty of mirth produc
ing sallies. In short, It was a good
show, but that portion oij which the
greatest stress should be laid were
those feminine costumes. An attempt
to describe them would be so ludicrous
that the writer would he laughed out
of countenance by those who really

I will content myself with saying that
