FINE 11 OF GERMAN AIRMEN
' IN PILOTING ARMIES TO FRANCE
Corporal Fritz Werner, Erstwhile Berlin Gentleman of Leis
ure, Signalled Artillery in Stubborn British Retreat at
Mons.
Berlin—German aeroplanes accomplish
ed great work in piloting the onrushing
armies through Belgium into France,
French and English reports to tlie con
trary. This; is the contention of Cor
poral Fritz Werner, of the German Aero
Corps, who should know’, for it was he
vs ho flew over Paris, dropping bombs
and bulletins of German victories, and
escaped after a thrilling battle in mid
air with a British and a French bird
man.
Fritz Weiner , society favorite and
?rack tennis player was one of the nota
bles who disappeared w’hen the order for
mnhilization was issued and who has
returned to Berlin—not in his old role of
podshed gentleman of leisure, but to re
place the flying machine he used so suc
cssfully in the invasion of France.

Werner’s criticisms of German and
French aeroplanes are interesting from
the point of view of an actual expert.
Werner propose to secure biplane
machine he thinks best adapted for war
purposes.
The French machines, Werner de
declared. are too lightly built for war
purposes and smash too easily. This
accounted, he thought, for failuVe of the
French aeroplane corps to accomplish
what had been expected of It.
It was in describing his fight over
Paris that the aviator brought out the
fact that both the English and French
flying machines can soar above the
German type. It was because neither
of his foes carried bombs that WerneA'
ascribed his escape.
Werner made light of the reported uni-

form victories of the Allies’ aeroplane
corps over the German airmen. Casual
ties among the ah- scouts, he said, had
been remarkably light considering the
risks. Uittle danger was experienced
from hostile firing.
Corporal Werner's estimate of the
fighting qualities of the Allies’ tallies
with that of officers of the general staff
who have returned from the front. "Ex
cept at first." said the aviator, "espe
cially at Eiege, the Belgians ran way.
The practice of the French artillery
Is excellent. But the British were the
best soldiers we met. Before their morale
became shaken by repeated defeats and
heavy losses they stuck to their trenches
doggedly. Our heavy artillery and the
way our men kept coming regardless of
losses finally got them and they' ran
too.
At Laying Traps.
He said he heard the Britisti also were
gVeat at minor tactics, suclt as laying
traps for advance guards in villages and
harrying outposts, but that their feats
in this line were absolutely without ef
fect in altering the final outcome.
According to Werner the four factors
largely responsible for the Germans’
successes in the first month's operations
were the heavy field artillery, the tra
veling field kitchens, the soldiers' sturdy
legs and the aviation corps. The inclu
sion of his own branch of tile services,
'boastful thougu it may seem, is con
firmed by the opinion of other offices.
In regard to the field guns, the French
artillery has proved a worthy opponent
—German officers cheerfully admit that
-hut thus far the FVeneh have had noth
ing to oppose the iteavy German artil
lery which, by its indirect, plunging fire,
has rendered trenches and gun positions
untenable and has pounded retiring
troops from orderly retreat into full
flight.
One of Few.
W r erner is one of the few who lias
viewed a great part of the modern line
of battle much as Napoleon trt- Frederick
the Great looked over the opposing
forces from some high point of vantage.
His was a graphic description of the
stubborn retreat of the British army
from Mons, for he had hovered over the
rert-eatlng troops, signalled to tlie Ger
man artillery the location of their en
trenchments and watched the final rear
ward march under the plunging fire of
the monster mortars. He saw the Ger
man cavalry block the Bvitons’ flight
near St. Quentin and bring Sir John
French’s force again to bay to be over
whelmed by the German Infantry attack
and the nail of shrapnel, and to melt
away In the direction of Compiegne.
Little Girl Cured of a Cold.
"Two years ago my little girl caught
a hard cold which went to her lungs
and she coughed almost constantly. I
got her a bottle of Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy. The beneficial effect
of this remedy was promptly demon
strated and this one bottle cured her,”
