Washington.—" With a gold treasure of more than $700,000,000, the federal reserve banks can face the future and grant ample relief," said a majority report of the house banking commit tee today in advocacy of the senate bill to allow the $100,000,000 now im pounded In vaults of member banks to be turned over to the federal re serve banks, to secure immediately the strength contemplated in the original law to be reached after three years. London, 8:47 p. m.—Major Patter son, In charge of the physicians and nurses on the American Hospital Ship Red Cross, now In Knlmouth harbor, conferred today with the Duchess of Mult-borough, Lady Randolph Church ill nnd Lady Paget concerning the placing of American Red Cross nurses and surgeons in the American wo men's hospital at Torquay. Jt has been virtually decided that tlie American hospital units assigned to England will he sent to Torquay. The Torquay Hospital has 300 beds, sod the American women are anxious that all the nurses and surgeons be Americans. The two units assigned lo England are only half enough for this hospital and an appeal probably will he made to the American Red Cross to supply two more units later. Dr. Ernest Lane, an English sur geon, director of the Torquay Hos pital. will supervise the American staff. SOOTHERS BANK THE ACCUSER Secretary McAdoo Wires Names of Two N. Y. Institu tions Charged With Re quiring Seven Per Cent In terest. Waehington—Secretary McAdoo to day telegraphed A. H. Wlggln, chair man of the New York Clearing House, the names of two New York banks which he declared have been accused by a large Southern bank of requir ing seven per cent Interest on sev eral large loans. The names of the two banks were made public, but the secretary said: “If the banks deny having made such loans at seven per cent Interest, I will take the matter up with the 1 Southern bank and get further de tails." The telegram was sent In response to one from Mr Wiggtn declaring that | New York bonks were not charging more than six per cent to customers and correspondents on “some Wall Street loans and on paper placed by : brokers."
