A Strange Contrast Between “The Human
Dynamo Stalling s, and the Soft
Spoken Connie Mack
Wbat a strange contrast is furnish
ed by a comparison of Connie Mack
and George Stallings, the two men
who will lead the rival teams into bat
tle for the highest honors in baseball.
How different are their temperaments,
their ways and their methods!
Connie Mack, gentle, soft voiced and
fatherly in his attitude toward his
players, never has been known to
speak an unkind word to them on or
off the ball field. Stallings, a human
dynamo, with a tongue like a lash,
rarely permits his men to go througn
a game without cussing them to the
full limit of his wonderful vocabulary.
Stallings has the theory that only
by driving his players every moment
during the game are results accomp
lished. From the moment that “play
ball” rings across the field until the
last man is out in the ninth, Stall
ings continues to apply the las:,.
When on the field, every error that
one of his players makes that is an
inexcusable nature brings forth a
caustic and immediate reprimand from
the great leader of the Boston team.
No Exception.
Stallings applies his verbal abuse to
stars and medicre players alike. He
spares none. And the strangest part
of it all, Stallings' abuse of his play
ers never has caused them to feel any
bitterness toward him, for when the
game Is over Stallings changes front.
He is the pal, the brother of each of
his players.
Stallings never rebukes a play'r
twice for the same error. He doesn't
dig into the past—doesn’t bring up
old scores. When he has panned a
player once for some blunder it’s the
end of it. Stallings has spoken his
piece—has relieved his feeling and the
Incident is closed.
Every man on the Boston club has
come to love Stallings And not one of
the men on the whole team has es
caped a tongue lashing from Stal
lings—not one has escaped a cad
down, couched in scorching language.
Understand Stallings.
The Boston players understand
Stallings. They know that his con
duct toward them on the ball field is
caused only through his frenzied am
bition to win. They have come to take
his rebuke without experiencing any
bitterness of feeling thereafter.
Stallings is a driver—even a harder
driver than McGraw, who held the
driving honors until this year. Stal
lings is after his men every minute.
Nothing escapes his eye. If one of
his men makes a "bore" play Stal
lings meets him as he appraches the
bench and that player is certain to get
"his" without delay.
But Stallings is just as ready with
his praise for a good play as he is
with abuse for a bad one. If one of
his men makes a brilliant catch or
thrown or smashes out a long hit
that aids the Braves' chances for vic
tory. Stallings rushes out from the
bench to meet him as he comes In and
welcomes him with all the enthusiasm
in his system.
Mack, in contrast. Is at all times
the most inconspicuous man on the
Athletics bench. He is ever calm and
quiet. No matter how great a blun
der his players may have made, no
matter how poorly they play. Mack
never has a word of condemnation.
And when one or another of hia men
make some brilliant play, Mac's feel
ings never run riot. He may greet the
pl«yer with a smile, a pat on the back
or a “fine work, boy,” but that uaualiy
is the extent of his greeting. No Ath
letic players ewer are greeted with a
few bear hugs, a dooen terrific Blaps
on the back and a lengthy speech of
praise aB are the Braves when they
do some great work.

IN NEAR FUTURE
Manager Chester, of the Academy of
Richmond county football team, has
Just closed an agreement with the
management of the Georgia Military
College for the playing of two games.
The first contest will come off in
Mllledgeville on the sth of October
and the second in Augusta, Novem
ber the 6th.
The Academy machine is now rapid
ly getting into shape and each and
every member of the team are all
for the scalps of the Mjilledgeville
lads. Now, as is well known, these
boys “up the road” have one of tho
best aggregations in their class, and
that if the Augusta representatives are
going to annex a game from them, they
will certainly have to play for it.
However, if the G. M. C. spells de
feat for the cadets in Augusta, there
will be no worry on this score for Man
ager Chester is "playing the game a
little ahead”—getting in shape for the
big grill that Is to be pulled off with
Riverside, during Fair week.
“ALLIES” WILL MEET THE
CADET MACHINE TO
MORROW
Manager McArthur, aided by Cap
tain Dick I.ewis, of the "Allies" (a
newly formed football team In Au
gusta) will lead their machine against
the Academy eleven tomorrow after
noon at 4:30 o’clock.
The Allies were organized one week
ago, however, as they have been put
ting: in some hard practice In the past
few days they expect to stand some
what of a showing against the cadets.
At any rate, the game Is expected to
be an interesting one.
As Manager Mac puts it: “Even if
we do lose, why we get the practice, so
there you are"
Mr Watkins will umpire and Mr.
“Babe" Carswell will referee.
The contest will be pulled off at
Warren Park.
