HOIAY MAASTRICHT IS STARTLED BY 'ACCIDENT’ 001 Came Out of the Mist From Above When English Airmen Thought They Were Over Germany. London,—People of the quiet Dutch city of Maastricht, on a sort of pe ninsula bounded on the weat by Ger many and on the east by Belgium, have been striving hard to maintain the neutrality of their kingdom. They were startled Tuesday morning, Sep tember 22nd, by the descent of a bomb from the mist overhead nnd a great explosion followed by the crash of glass. An aeroplane had swooped down to ward the roofs of the town and drop ped a bomb. The propectlle fell near the Brussels gate of the old town, tore limbs from trees, ripped gashes In the walls of a house and shatter ed a number of windows. Several citizens attempted to follow tbe course of the aeroplane In motor ears, but It soon was lost to sight. Lost Its Way. The Dutch government Immediately took steps to Inquire of the Herman nnd Belgian governments whether any flying men of their armies were re sponsible for the unpleasant sur prise. The sequel developed the next day when the British press bureau an nounced a raid by British aviators aimed at the Zeppelin establishments In Dusseldorf and Cologne. The British aerial expedition started from Antwerp, nnd while the section bound for Dusseldorf reached Its destination, the Cologne contingent confessed that It lost Its way In the fog. A. A. Williams Arrested At Brussels. Denounced by Germans as “Pig” and Show ered With Curses. London, 4:53 a. m.—Albert A. Wil liams. pastor of the Maverick Congre gational Church of Boston, has reach ed London after arrest and Imprison ment In Brussels at the hands of the German military authorities on the charge of being an English spy and with trying to buy Information con cerning the movement of German troops. Notes made by Mr. Williams for a sermon on the horrors of war fell Into the hands of the Germans when he was arrested. A German lieuten ant thought they constituted code messages. Mr. Williams was arrest ed nnd taken to German military headquarters. Released by Whitlock, He was held along with thirty other prisoners, mostly Belgians and put through a drastic examination. He was not permitted to communicate with Brand Whltlork, the American minister. Finally he persuaded a Ger man student that he was not a spy and he managed to get a letter to Mr. Whitlock, who brought about his re lease, Mr. Williams says that during the two days of his Imprisonment he and the other prisoners were denounced by the Germans as pigs and showered with oaths In an effort to frighten them. The Belgian prisoners re garded Williams as a friend but they all were reluctant to talk as they fe ired the Germans had spies among them. TRADE WEDGE IS MADE BY U. S. New York. —That United States manufacturers have begun an Inva sion of the South American trade field is shown In an announcement made public today by Consul General Joso Bidding, of Uruguay, who stated that American manufacturers had sold to merchants of his country a quantity of glassware and hardware. Uruguay formerly bought such goods from Germany. The sales were made on terms satisfactory to both buyers and sellers, he said. A still larger field awaits the Amer ican manufacturer In Uruguay, ac cording to the consul general, who said hls country was In a good finan cial condition. St..
