Folowlng la a synopsis of the story: Robert Clay, a young American mining engineer and soldier of for tune, after an extended tour of the tropics, has begun his return trip to the United States. In passing the republic of Olancho, situated on the shores of South America, he is at tracted by the curious contour of the rocks which rise abruptly from the sea's edge. He perceives that the ac tion of the sea has In places worn deep recesses Into the solid wall, while in others the cliffs have remained im pregnable, He determines to satis fy his curiosity, and persuades the captain to put him ashore In a small boat. Clay's examination of the rocks reveals valuable deposits of Iron ore. Through the American consul, he Is Introduced to President Alvarez, of Olancho, and from him secures an option on the valuable lands. Return ing to America, he succeeds in Inter esting Mr. Langham, a mining capi talist, and there is formed the Amer ican Mining Company. Clay Is com missioned to return to Olancho as gen eral manager of the mines. He en gages as miners the idle soldiers of the regiment under the command of General Rojas, vice-president of Olan cho. MacWllltams, an adventurer and soldier of fortune, becomes foreman, Ted Langham has been sent to Olan cho hy his father to gain practical knowledge In mining engineering, also becomes an assistant, to Clay. HERE’S THE STORY OF "SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE” READ IT, THEN SEE IT AT THE GRAND TONIGHT AUGUSTA HERALD, AUGUSTA, GA, between his government and the min ing company. His dissatisfaction Is, howe\ cr, the cloak for personal greed, and Clay, anticipating the blackmail ing demand, has placed Ted Langham and MacWUllam* to overhear the con versation. Clay refuses Mendoza’s de mand, and the General leaves, vowing open denunciation of Clay and his company In the senate, and revolution against President Alvarez. The night of the president’s bad, Hope, an heiress member of the party, is denied permission to go, and Clay, finding a growing fondness, lin gers behind the party. In ridins through the city to the ball he dis covers that Mendoza’s men have post ed bills inciting revolution, denounc ing the American, and linking the names of Captain Stuart and Madame Alvarez in a compromising manner. He hastens back to Insure Hope’s safe ty, and then, despatching a warning to the palace, summonses Ted and Mac- Wllllamz. Mendoza's troops, who have arrived in the city under pretense of partici pation In the morning review, capture President Alvarez as he drives to the palace, and he is taken to the out skirts of the city and executed. Men doza’s men then turn toward the pal ace and make their demand for mon ey. The palace is looted and Captain Stuart Is shot. Hope, who has come to the palace after,a wild horseback ride over the mountain trail, to return the portfolio to Madame Alvarez, rushes to the house top and waves the flag, the signal for Clay’s mer) to advance. Mendoza’s men are routed. In the general looting of the town which follows, the telegraph wires are cut and the consul Is forced to n -e. He dispatches King's yacht to sail to Ixis Boros and to notify the U. S. S. Detroit of the danger to the Ame icans, and asking their aid. The kaiser and members of general staff.
