WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14. NEWS OF NEARBY TOWNS CIRCULATING PETITION FOR RELEASE OF WILLIAM f* STON MAN Anderson, S. C. —Mr. Ben Rogers, a former police officer of Pelzer, has been spending several days in the city circulating a petition for the pardon of former policeman Claude Poore of Williamston, who some months ago shot and killed Joe Kelly, also a form er police officer of the same town. Mr. Rogers claims that he has five hundred names on his petition and that there are being circulated in dif ferent sections of the county seven other petitions praying that executive clemency be exercised in behalf of the slayer. Mr. Rogers’ petition sets out that Poore killed Kelley only after he had been abused, cursed and threatened and that Poore not only has a wife and several small children dependent upon him, but that he has become the father of another child since his conviction. They have arranged for cotton decorations for the armory anu have purchased a whole cotton CHILD GETS SICK ' CROSS, FEVERISH IF CONSTIPATED \ “California Syrup of Figs’’ can’t harm tender stomach or bowels. A laxative today saves a sick child tomorrow. Children simply will not take the time from play to empty their bowels, which become clogged up with waste, liver gets sluggish; stomach sour. Look at the tongue, mother! If coated, or your child is listless, cross, feverish, breath bad, restless, doesn’t eat heartily, full of cold or has sore throat or any other children’s ail ment, give a teaspoonful of “Califor nia Syrup of Figs,” then don’t worry, because it is perfectly harmless, and in a few hours all this constipation poison, sour bile and fermenting waste will gently move out of the bowels, and you have a well, playful child again. A thorough “inside cleansing" is oftimes all that is neces sary. It should be the first treatment given in any sickness. Beware of counterfeit fig syrups, Ask your druggist for a 50-cent bottle of “California Syrup of Figs,” which has full directions for babies, chil dren of all ages and for grown-ups plainly printed on the bottle. Look carefully and see that it is made by ."he “California Fig Syrup Company.” SIMPLE BUT SURE / Hyomei the Great Catarrh Remedy. “Just Breathe it” and Be Cured. Do not try to cure catarrh, head colds or snuffles by taking drugs Into the stomach that can do little more than upset the digestion. These com mon but dangerous diseases, that often cause the loss of hearing and the sense of smell and taste, cannot be cured that way. The common-sense way is to breathe Hyomei, which gets the medication right where it is need ed to heal the raw and inflamed lin ing of the air passages, kill the germs and restore the diseased tissue to a perfectly healthy condition. Hyomei is a mixture of antiseptic and germicidal oils that you breathe through a small inhaler. No bother; no disagreeable medicine to swallow; simply use the inhaler a few times daily and the health-giving medica tion of Hyomei will quickly soothe and heal the irritated tissues—stop dis tressing choking and unclean dis charges of the nose—your breathe freely—dull headaches cease, and every catarrhal symptom soon van ishes. Druggists everywhere sell the Hyo mei complete outfit that contains in haler and bottle of medicine. There Is nothing more economical, simple • 'and pleasant to use, or that gives such rapid and lasting benefit as Hyomei— and perfectly harmless. T. G. How ard sells it on the "No-cure-no-pay” plan. Time Expires Next Year; Wants Re-election, Aiken, S. C. —Throw a stone in Aiken and, whatever direction it takes, the likelihood is that the missile will, In falling, strike at man who is either an avowed candidate or who is talked of as a candidate for the Aiken post mastership. There are so many applicants for the place now held by Mr. C. E. Carmen, who has held office since his first ap pointment by President McKinley, that Congressman Byrnes will find it diffi cult to select from among them one man to recommend to President Wilson for appointment. It is even being suggested here that the congressman may, to hit upon one man, leave the selection to a primary election, in which the citizens might designate their choice, but nothing of a definite nature has as yet been done. Congressman James F. Byrnes is ex pected home from Washington within the next day or two. Candidate for Re-election, Postmaster Carmen's term will not expire until sometime next year, but several of the candidates, including Mr. Carmen, who is a candidate for re appointment, are already active, and Congressman Byrnes is being besieged with letters, applications and petitions. The friends of Mr. C. E. Monts, who for many years has been Southern Railway ticket agent at Aiken, are urging him for the place. Mr. Dave Gaston, Jr., recently graduated from the University of South Carolina law department, is working for the place, as are Mr. W. M. Eubanks, at present a member of city council, and Mr. Lu ther Weeks, and it is understood that Mr. Lawrence Overstreet, Mr. T. J. Southall and Mr. A. K. Lorenz, editor of the Aiken Journal and Review, are tentative candidates among several others. BUZZARDS ATTRACT ATTENTION TO DEAD NEGRO; ORANGEBURG Orangeburg, S. C.—The badly decom posed body of a colored man, about 20 years of age, was found late Wed nesday afternoon in a corn field of E. C. Bruce, near the southern limits of Bamberg. Cotton pickers were at trr-ted to the spot by carrion crows at the body. The face and head had been partly destroyed by the buzzards but the body w'as identified as that of Walter Kennedy, who is said to have been to a party of gamblers who wer J raided by the police Saturday night. Several shots were fired and it is believed by some that the negro wa~ shot and ran away to the spoi where the body was found and there fell and died, but no gunshot wounds could be found about the body, and noth ing has developed thus far to substan tiate this belief. The condition of the crop was 70 per cent of normal and the average price $1.14 a bushel. ON THE FIRING LINE What it means to most men. There are many true heroes that have perished in the European war who “never smelled powder,” but who succumbed to sickness after hard campaigning—coupled with bad water and lack of food. The sick and de billtated man Is as much out of place In his struggle for life and existence as he would be on the firing line. On the other hand the strong, vigorous man, his veins filled with rich, red blood, has an enormous advantage in whatever position he may be fated to occupy. In war or business. The prompt and certain action of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov ery in driving all harmful germs and Impurities from the blood, sets In mo- ! tlon the repair process which works actively on the diseased membrane where Catarrh flourishes unchecked or where the skin gives warning of the bad blood beneath by showing pim ples and bolls, also the skin clears up i and becomes wholesome and ruddy. Speaking ... THE ... Public Mind CONCERNING THE COTTON SIT UATION, To The Herald. Please publish in your valuable pa per the enclosed clipping taken from the Atlanta Constitution of Otcober 12 entitled “Southern President Re duces Own Salary.” I comend it to the serious consider ation of the cotton mills In and around Augusta. It is high time that they “follow suit" and do likewise. The pa tient and long-suffering stockholders have gone without dividends for many years In some Instances and It la now time for the officers, officials and oth ers drawing fat salaries to share with them In the hard times, it will take close, rigid economy in the manage ment of these mills to keep them go ing. Let this economy start at the top and come down. A MILL STOCKHOLDER. SOUTHERN PRESIDENT REDUCES OWN SALARY. All Officials Receiving Over $2,500 Annually Aocept Temporary Reductions. Heading the list with a 20 per cent reduction of his own salary, Fairfax Harrison, president of the Southern Railroad, it was an nounced Sunday night by H. W. Miller, assistant to the president, has Inaugurated a retrenchment plan designed to affect equally all officers and Interests in the cor poration. Graduated reductions of all salaries above $2,500 a year and a reduction of the dividend of the preferred stockholders from 5 to 4 per cent, payable In deferred scrip, are Included.ln the plan. "President Harison has deemed It only fair,” the railroad state ment says, "that officers of the company should share the snort flee.” Curtailment was made nec essary, It adds, “by the current de pression of business,” which brought a "consequent reduction In the opportunity of many hundreds of employes to earn the wages to which they have been accustomed.” Under the plan salaries of $2,700 would be reduced 2 per cent and the statement declares all officers affected "accepted the situation with loyal appreciation of neces sity." CAN THE CITY THROUGH LEGAL POWER COMPEL YOU TO SAC RIFICE YOUR PROPERTY. To The Herald. Is it possible that the city can con demn your property, because you do not care to take less thnn the valua tion price for same? If this is the law, the statue on the tower of the court house which represents Justice should be removed immediately. It seems that thiß law will be in ef fect in regard to Buy street property, for they are making very low offers for valuable homes on the river front. The people on Bay street are per fectly willing to sell their property to the city, but they do not care to sac rifice their homes and receive far Ichs than valuation, because they will prob ably want to buy elsewhere, and de sirable places in Augusta are very high In price. I think the levee commissioners Rhould consider this matter very care fully, because it is a question of seri ous nature. A BAY STREET RESIDENT. 0 MR. ROOBEVELT. To The Herald.
