Description of Daring Encounter Between French and Ger
man Fight in Air.
Paris^—.The activity of German
aeroplanes over Paris has brought up
a general discussion of the value of
theee machines in warfare and a re
cital of thrilling aerial duels between
French and German machines. Ono
French corps commander Is quoted as
saying that In his opinion a single
aeroplane was aa valuable as a divi
sion of cavalry.
Aeroplanes ars of greatest servlde In
preventing surprises and few impor
tant movements of troops have been
made which have not been promptly
reported by aerial scouts before thetr
completion.
At Critical Moment.
A daring encounter took place re
cently between a German monoplane
and a French biplane during a criti
cal moment 1n an Important maneuver
horth of the Oise. The German ma
chine was seen sailing over the French
llnee Just before a strong detachment
of troops was to start on a movement
to the north. For the success of this
maneuver It wap vital that this sentry
of the air he removed and a French
biplane undertook the responsibility.

AUGUSTA HERALD, AUGUSTA, GA.
The French machine rose from the
ground abruptly and In rapid circles
gained an altitude greater than that
of the Gorman; hut even this advant
age was not sufficient to drive the
scout away. In a daring dive In which
he braved a heavy fire from the
French lines, the German descends!
to a height ot 1,000 yards and skill
fully avoiding the French machine
started to drive for the German lines.
Advantage in Speed.
The Frenchman seemed to have the
advantage in speed, which has not of
ten been the case In aeroplane en
counters In this war. For a while the
German was successful In keeping out
of reach hut the biplane, continuing its i
flight at a considerable height, finally
attained an advantageous position.
Then there could be heard the quick j
and sharp reports of a machine gun!
on the French flier. The monoplane!
floated for a few moments as If the i
pilot had lost control and then, slut- '
tering like a wounded bird on the
wing, started an oblique descent which
ended In Its crashing to the earth.

most fringe of this screen Is compos
ed of cavalry split up into small par- I
ties or patrols, which work their way.

emy’s country, gathering and sending
back Information, preventing the de
struction of roads and railways, which
their own army will want to use, ,
stopping the removal or secretion of I
supplies, and a thousand and one
other things. In 1870 the German j
cavalry screen was often 50 miles
ahead of the main armies. The screen 1
increases In strength from front to |
rear, the advanced horsemen being
backed up by artillery and Infantry,
so that In the event of a check of an
attempt by the enemy to penetrate
the screen a force can be Immediately
concentrated for offensive or defen
sive purposes.
R*oonnaits*nc*.
A complete force of all arms, which
may be anything from a brigade to an
army corp», Is sometimes sent on a
special mission to penetrate Into the
enemy’s country for the purpose of
obtaining special Information. Such
a force would, when In touch with the
endmy, attack him vigorously and
compel him to expose his strength.
Notable examples of reconnaissance
In force have been on the French dash
to Mulhausen and to Soarburg, and
the operatlone of the Germans against
the Belgians to the north of the
Meuse.

Don’t Trifie With Your Health!
—it is too precious a possession. It is trifling to neglect the little every-day kind
of ailments. It is trifling, too, to take medicines of unknown or doubtful ingredi
ents. If your stomach gets out of order, your food is not digested and, of course,
your blood gets thin and you become weak, ready to be a prey to the disease
germs always ready to attack the run-down and the anaemic. If your
liver can't do its work, your blood becomes impure and many troubles
follow. If your bowels are irregular, poisons accumulate in your body.
helps the stomach to digest food properly, strengthens the ’liver, regulates the bowels.
As a consequence you are vigorous, full of snap and life! Forty years ago Dr. Pierce
discovered that a glyceric extract of Golden Seal and Oregon grape roots, of queen’s root
and bloodroot with black cherry bark would aid all
the digestive organs to work as Nature intended
they should. Thousands have found that the Golden
Medical Discovery he then introduced to the world
has restored them to health when suffering from
stomach and liver troubles. Now is the time for
you to try this famous remedy and to secure
for yourself a larger share of health and strength.
You can get the Golden Medical Discovery
in tablet or liquid form from dealers
in medicine is —or send SO one-cent stamps
for a trial box of Dr. Pierce’s tablets.
The knowledge you ought to have about your body—and to
enable you to avoid sickness—you will find in Dr. Pierce’s
great book, The Common Sense Medical Adviser. Thousands
of copies have been sold at $1.50 each, but you can get a copy
free if you will send 31 one-cent stamps merely to pay for the
I wrapping and mailing of the newly revised and up-to-date
edition. Address: Dr. Pierce, Invalids’ Hotel, Buffalo, N.Y.
